Amsoil, Mobil 1, Syn3 & Redline's retail price has gone up to 10.99-13.49 a qt at shops around Reno, NV.

$52 for 4 qts = $13.00 a qt

I use the regular AMSOIL 20w-50 rather then the AMSOIL motorcycle. They are really just the same but the motorcycle can be used in the tranny also, but the regular is cheaper. I use AMSOIL grear oil anyway. I pay 7.95 for the engine oil and 12.95 for the 75-90 from my indy.

I tried the highly touted Amsoil and had an issue with excessive top end noise on start-up, the lifters were bleeding down and the noise was severe, I switched back to Motul 7100 their best synthetic and the problem went away, obviously some kind of viscosity issue when extremely hot.

Did your Amsoil guy tell you they are the same product?

I think your wrong but I've been wrong before....For the extra $1 a quart, I would rather use the stuff made for m/c use only....

When oil goes up, EVERYTHING goes up. Thats common sense. I am sure Amsoil will not care if you quit using their product. I use it in everything i own but do not promote it, I just like what it has done in my vehicles. In my truck i can go a year between oil changes and the oil and filter are still good when i change it so even at the price it is now it is still more cost effective for me to use in my car and truck. I change my bike according to the book and saving a buck or two to try something else is worthless to me because having it delivered to my door is worth that.

My cost for MCV 20/50 was 8.50 per qt, I can deal with that.

My indy said it is the same. If you look on the back of the regular bottle it does says it is recomended for motorcycles also. Dont fall for the "motorcycle oil only" hype. The regular 20w-50 AMSOIL also has the rating of JASO MA (Motorcycle). Many people on here run syn oils that are for "marketed" for autos. Most people on here run some type of gear oil in the tranny, I dont think I have ever seen a "motorcycle only" gear oil.

BTW - ALL synthetics come from dino based oil stock. They simply arrange the molecular structure to their own specs and build the oil from there.
Um ... NOT true. Group 4 oils (synthetics like Amsoil, Mobile 1, etc) contain NO dino base, it's polyalphaolefin, from ethylene gas.

Group 3 oils contain dino base, but are synthetic BLENDS.

What's driving up prices on non-dino oils is (as has been stated earlier) production costs. This includes increased costs for raw materials, increased costs for transportation of raw materials, increased labor costs, increased manufacturing costs (electricity, steam, etc), and increased shipping and distribution costs. Other than that, I don't know WHY it would cost more!

Even with the increased cost, it's STILL way better than dino oil. Just my .02.
