I bought an 08 ultra a month ago and I installed Vance and Hines true dual headers and reinstalled the stock mufflers. it took care of the heat problem for me and it sounds good enough that I am keeping the stock mufflers on
The header replacement is what I was looking for first, but with the comment about the mufflers being different has got me a little concerned. Any real fact in this? Also, is there a part number for the V&H headers for the 08's?
I heard left and right stock mufflers were not the same. They are made for the crossover.
So putting just headers on you would have two mufflers that are not the same back pressure .Is this true?
That would be true. There are left and right mufflers with totally different guts. So if you went with true duals, mufflers would also have to be purchased.
I know some like the heat shields but to me they are a band-aid that does not address the problem and may cause other problems. I would try to get rid of the heat not move it to a different place. The stage 1 upgrade is your best bet. Pipes, filter, and fuel management. You can keep the stock mufflers and change the pipes. They key is adding more fuel to the system to get it off the lean side. I have the Sert, K&N SE A/C, and Rush 2.0s(they are a little noisy) and a good dyno. Problem solved, runs and sounds great, and i don't have to play with a laptop. good luck.
When I purchased my 08 ultra I told the dealer to install the V&H headers and reinstall the OEM mufflers prior to me taking delivery. My 08 runs and preforms perfect, if the mufflers are different it doesn't make a difference in performance on my bike. I average 42 2up and 44 mpg solo
I would think the dealer would have had an issue if the difference was enough to make it a bad idea and attempt to sell me new mufflers, but they agreed with what I ask for.
As a prior post indicated the Fullsac system produces the same situation using the OEM mufflers and I had that set up on my 06 ultra that I traded in for the 08 and it ran well also
This simple effective add-on will help to remove 90% of the heat concern for your legs and your passenger's feet. You can save some coins by getting the cheap looking plastic versions...Or, get a functional, great looking, matches the seat, easy to install product that looks like it belongs on the bike. You won't be sorry you bought 'em! Better-n-chrome, won't show finger prints!

Changing your header and using stock pipes wouldn't be a good option. I'd recommend looking at Vance and Hines (true dual) with touring mufflers. Upgrade to a stage 1 air cleaner, SERT and dyno....or a V&H Fuel Pack. Lots of options to consider.....I like the idea of wrapping your pipes with heat wrap and putting the shields back on.
