Default Major electrical issues??

Today while on a ride home from the casino, my buddy started having problems with his ultra. 2001 ultra, with out warning just died at a stop. Started right back up but wouldnt idle. Then everything was fine again. Then his speedo quit working and the engine light came on, bike died at a stop again. Finaly figured out the two problems are linked some how but have no clue where the prob is. Thw bike ran fine other than the idle part, he rode the rest of the way home and the speedo would quit, then start again all the way home. Kinda sounds like a loose connection to me but where??????

I'd check all the grounds inside the batwing and especially at the battery and chassis.

I was having kinda the same thing with my bike and I had two broken wires in harness that runs on the right hand side of the neck. Becareful when cuttin the wraping off the harness to get to the wires. LOts of wires and took a long time to find them. One was a black wire and the other was a little larger red wire that was a power wire. Look for what might look like bubbles.

Check the ignition / accessory on-off switch they have been known to burn up internally.

if it is fuel imfected, try the wires near the throttle body by giving them a wiggle .

I had a problem like that on my 06 classic with 8k on it and from what ive determined.. there were 2 problems . a bad connection in the harness under the fairing. I pulled all the connectors and cleaned them with contact cleaner and put some dialectic grease on them before i put them back together.. I also replaced the TSM on my bike cause the security light kept comming on and the speedo and tach quit on and off and I also got a bus er. I dont have security so why would the light come on ? The turn signals blinked like 6 times when i went to start it telling me there was a code in the TSM.. I found a brand new one on ebay and lucked out .. 25.00 and some change shipped..
Since my bike was wrecked and slid down the highway on ramp hi siding one way then the other i think it screwed up the TSM but ive also heard they are just problematic..'
So far so good . I also got a heck of a deal on a manual for the 06 touring bikes on cd.. It also encludes the electrical manual.. Anyone needs a copy i can maybe help.. That helps a bunch for trouble shooting but it still didnt give me the answers i needed Being electrical all i can say is good luck..

the hard part is getting it to stay broken long enough to figure it out. Put it up on a lift, pull all the luggage, fairing, seat, etc off of it, then put a charger on the battery, turn everything on and start moving things, wiggle wires and harness wherever you can reach it, keep at it until you find the spot that makes it go dark. Since it's an issue common to the accessory and ignition circuits, focus on the ignition switch, power relay, main breaker, wiring between them, and all the ground cables, bat to frame, frame to engine, frame to triple tree, and anywhere the main wiring harness ground wires are attached. After this has been powered up for a while, feel how hot the main breaker is... I've commonly found corrosion in the crimped on terminals at the main breaker creates a lot of excess heat, and the heat wicks into the main breaker making it trip
prematurely. I'd recommend a new 50Amp main breaker, and replace/solder on new terminals at that location. Good Luck
