Well I just had this problem occur tonight. Fired the bike up and it immediately was idling at 2k. It's never done that and I've had it since Oct '08. Once it warmed up the idle did settle down a little to 1200-1250 so I rode some. Every time I stopped the idle was 1200-1250. It used to be around 950-1000. Hmmm...
When I finally got home and pulled in the garage I let it sit a bit and it settled back down to 1000. I'll see in the morning and if it does it I'll try the reset technique mentioned all over this site.

It turns out the connector under my seat was 1) not clamped down at the factory and 2) the pins in the connector where damaged.
It was inspected, repaired and reconnected. I used some duck tape to make sure that the little pooper doesn't disconnect again and have beat the crap....ah, ridden the bike for about 850 miles with out a hick up.
BTW-this is a very common reason why the "system" goes haywire. The connector under your seat. (from what I've read) SEVERAL bikes at my dealer had many hours of time in them before they realized that the factory just wasn't paying good enough attention to the somewhat delicate connector.
I say disconnect, inspect and SECURELY reconnect that connector.
BTW---H-D isn't the only player that stupid little connectors can be a problem.
please take a pic of the area under the seat and point out the problem connector..i cant see anything out of the ordinary?
Mine did this until the dealer reflashed the ecu after I did my 1000 mile service. It hasn't happened since. One thing I noticed was if you shut the bike off right after revving the engine it remembers the last idle setting and reverts to that on start up. Again after the patch was applied I have not had that problem again.
