Default Too Late for Yellowstone?

Hey all - I'm thinking about doing a quick trip up to Yellowstone and the Beartooth Highway. I would be riding tomorrow through Saturday. Is it too risky to try it this time of year? Cold is no problem but I don't want to risk snow or ice on the road. There are scattered thunderstorms predicted (20 to 30% chance) and I know that up high it will be snow rather than rain. Any input?

I think you will be okay. Snow usually doesn't come till October.

I was there about 5 weeks ago and it was the best ride of my life! You will love it.

The forecast looks good for Yellowstone, Beartooth is always a crap shoot as you can get snow there in July. The mountains here in SE Wyoming already have snow, but roads are open and clean. I don't know how long some of the attractions in the park are open, I thought a lot closed after Labor Day weekend. I couldn't find a site to see if there is snow at the top of Beartooth yet or not, but any shower in the area will be snow on the pass this time of year.

Can you check weather.com for the temps? I would not go below 34 degrees. I was there in Aug 06 - beautiful.

Again, maybe check temperature (highs and lows) for Red Lodge Montana. Should be similar.

Thanks for the support. I've checked the forecast for the whole area - Jackson, Yellowstone, Red Lodge, Cooke City, etc. The lows are supposed to be in the high 30's and the highs anywhere from 55 to 70. It's really only the mountain passes I'm worried about. The road report for Beartooth shows wet in spots, but everything else is showing dry.

The crowds are gone. Now is the time, I think. Several years ago, my family and I went to Carlsbad Caverns in March. NO one was in the place. Crowd free is the way to see Yellowstone.

Hit the starter.

I went through Cody, Wyo. on the bike yesterday. Hot and dry, and the Beartooths looked to be pretty clear so I don't think the road conditions will be a problem. It's also about 80 degrees in Billings (70 miles from the Beartooth Pass) today.

If you go to www.cookecitysinclair.com they have live time web cams. Cooke City, in case you aren't aware, is the last town you hit going over the Beartooths before you hit the park. Well, ok, Silvergate is actually the last town you hit, but they're only a couple of miles apart.

Enjoy your trip!
