Default 2009 Ultra Classic mod questions

I'm seriously considering an Ultra Classic at a dealer in Tulsa, but I'm still adding up the costs on what I need to buy so I thought I'd ask in this forum.

I'd like some slip-ons, however I don't want something that will rattle my teeth, drown out the radio and make the wife deaf on the back. I like a deep throaty rumble but something that fits to riding long hauls (500 miles+).

As I understand, most people recommend a Screaming Eagle air filter along with a new download when the slip-ons are put on? Can HD do their own ECU flash or would this be something I have to buy aftermarket to give them?

I'd like to lower the bike about 1", the dealer said they can do that adjustment there...is that an adjustment on the stock shocks or would I have to get a different set? I'm pretty sure a riding boot with a thicker sole will compensate and I may not have to lower it at all.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

I used the Jack Pot slip on pipes from Moto Fuel on my 09 Ultra. Very happy with them. Improved peformance with no other mods as of yet. Runs strong for Stock and not too loud but nice sound. I love them. Here is their link.

You need no air filter or fuel management with these pipes, although I am sure you will want to add them as they become available. No download required.

To lower your bike HD has a different set of shocks. There is a aftermarket bracket I have heard of that will lower with existing shocks. I would be careful until you are sure they do not affect anyhthing on your ride before I did this mod. I am sure there are people here who will chime in on this to help you.

Yes, if you add the slip-ons & SE AC you will need at least the HD flash. If this is all you are doing to your bike, you're gold. If you plan to do more, then you will have to go with an add-on box (either HD or <insert many names here>). Of course, right now I don't think there are any for the 09's except for the HD flash. The stock slipons sound good to me but HD SE touring or performance 4" touring slipons are good and allow different end caps if you're interested. Supertrapp used to make the HD slipons and now sell a slightly louder version called the SE but are still supposed to be less than 3db increase over stock....YMMV.

I'm 6'4" so lowering a bike is not a question to me, but FWIW, I think to lower the back requires new shocks and the front, I have no idea...but Boots would be MUCH CHEAPER if that's fine with you. Or you can buy a lower saddle (do a search) to do the same thing.

Remember, any advice you get is, in the end, worth exactly what you pay for it <grin>.

Cheers, geeded

I'm 5'8" and weight about 170, right now the ***** of my feet touch the ground..and I'm sure when I'm 65 my ***** will touch the ground too...

I do find that I have to lean forward slightly to get a good grip on the handlebars, I'll also be looking for a handlebar that will allow me to sit all the way back in the saddle with my feet on the boards. I only need about 1.5".

if you do lower it, dont buy those relocation brackets, i did and it was nothing but a headache buy progressive shocks in a shorter lenght or get street glide shock if you like the air shocks, i personally put 11.5" progressive 412's on my 06 standard and i wouldnt ride a bagger without them. as far as the exhaust, find a pair of slip-ons you like and put them on, you should not have to tune it with just slip-ons

Thank youm for the post about the relocation brackets. I will take them off my consideration list and stick to eventually replacing rear shocks.

As for fuel management, there is one I know of available for the 09 models. It is a TFI from Techlusion. Here is the link. The site says avaiable for 08 HD but I called and the 09 unit is now also available.

progressive 412's are not top of the line, but they ride and handle very good, i got mine for $210 out the door, the relocation brackets are cheap and do lower the bike, but they change the angle of the shock and i could not get mine to ride the way i wanted

Not to suggest there are even relocation mounts available for the 09s yet, but if the angle of the shock changes, the spring rates and damping will then change, too. Thus the change in ride quality. If the shocks become more vertical, they will become more progressive; less vertical, less progressive. I'll assume they become less vertical with the brackets, which nets the opposite change in progressive response needed for less wheel travel.

If you do lower the rear with 54635-09 low profile shocks then you should also lower the front suspension with the HD front end lowering kit or another brand.

Did my Ultra pipes with a set of Rush slip ons with the 1.75" baffles. Wanted a bit more but not like the old Screaming E's on my Deuce. Real nice growl but radio comes thru loud and clear.
