The tranny only holds 28 ozs, so whats the point of saving the oil?
Not to split hairs, but the '07 six speed holds 32oz....
Either way, if you are using a synthetic gear oil, what's the point of wasting a $12 quart of oil if you don't have to? Even if you are using 20-50, that's going to run you upwards of $9. I was going to wait until my 10K service to change my cable when I changed out the tranny oil, but I had the pipe off changing a baffle out before then. Seemed like a good time to do the cable and not waste the money on new gear oil that I didn't need. But that's just me.
I'd just change the oil at the same time I change the cable. As for when to change the cable, I treat the cable as a wearable item. Meaning, it is better to change it BEFORE it needs to be so you will never have a cable snap when you are out on the road. I change mine every 2 years and have done this on all bikes since around 1988 when my last cable broke. I have not had a cable break since with changing them every 2 years. A new cable is a lot less expensive than a tow fee
RRSJS - ditto on the 2x4 advice. I figure I lost less than 2 teaspoons doing the same a couple months ago for my bar swap. Although, it was very disconcerting when lowering the jack. My brain kept thinking it was gonna tip! Of course not so.
In case this is of any use here's my "how-to" I put together for a bar swap. It's for a RK, but maybe some of the steps will be handy.
