I installed a 95" kit in my 06 StreetGlide back in spring. At the time I downloaded a generic Power Commander map for my configuration. Know that I have about 1800 miles on the install I want a custom map and dyno tune. My question is this, the local dealer wants $390 to do this, does this seem high? They are saying it is about 3 hours of Dyno time to do this, seems a little high. What are your thoughts?
The most common problems encountered with generic maps are poor mileage and/or deceleration popping. If your bike suffers from either, a custom map will make you smile. At $390 the shop is charging $130/hr - pretty high. Most shops (HD) charge $80-90 per/hr in my area...BUT if this dyno tuner is exceptional, go for it. It should only take one application of their expertise to get it right. If a second is needed it should be at THEIR expense so see if they garantee their tuneup.
My shop charged me a flat rate of $250 for the dyno tune, but then I had them install the Vance & Hines mufflers and SE A/C, so they got some hours from that. It did take 3-4 hours and 6-8 runs on the dyno to tweak mine in, so the time is not unreasonable.
If you have it done be sure to tell the tuner what you are looking for. If you say nothing they will likely tune for the best performance and you gas mileage could go down significantly. I didn't say anything when they did mine and my mileage went from the low 40s to the low 30s.....they did do a retune at no expense to me and found a "happy medium" that got my mileage back up to the high 30s without hurting performance noticeably.
Local guy here in Upstate NY charges a standard $150. Cheapest I could find and he did wonders for my Road King. I have the 95" big bore kit and screaming eagle heads, no cams or high compression pistons and he got me 89 torque and 81 hp. up about 9 in each category from the map that came from Fuel Moto. The afr hovers right at 13 all the way through. No popping, smooth all the way through and i still avg 42-47 depending on the right hand. Whether he does 5 runs or 25 it's $150. He is located in Vernon, NY and has a beautiful shop. His number is 315-337-2446, usually he doesn't hit the shop till after 7 and works till around 11 or 12 as this is his second business. His name is Mike. Tell him you saw a post on here from Ryan.
Depends on what fuel management system your using. Doc's HD in south STL did a great job on mine. They specialize in PCIII's. They got me the best numbers I've seen for my basic setup 81 HP and 94 ft/lbs T. Cost $375 flat rate.
