Default Python Exhaust - General Exhaust Questions

Could you guys please help out a newbie with some questions about exhaust?

Just purchased a 06 ultra. A buddy has a 05 Electra Glide to which he just installed the Rinehart true duals. He has his used Python slip-ons for sale for a significant discount over what a new set would cost me. These Pythons don't have a scratch on them and were used for about maybe 1000 miles or 2 months, so they are all but brand new. I was thinking of holding them for the future.

Now, being new to all this, I had not planned on making any changes to the bike for a long time. One reason being concern about voiding the factory warranty. I know about the MM act and so forth with aftermarket parts, and the bottom line is that HD could always claim some aftermarket part caused the bike to break, and it's up to you to fight it out. I am getting the impression that exhausts are one of the first things to be changed on a bike.

My questions is this:

Reading here I get the opinion that the 06 bikes run lean, and opening up the exhaust will make that condition worse. So, if you change the exhaust then you should get a HD re-program of the computer (which costs $180ish??). This will give you some benefit in horsepower and get some heat away from the engine??. Then you should also really modify the air intake to get the most benefit from the exhaust...yes?? and this is called a "stage 1" mod??

After doing the above, and as a alternative to the factory re-program of the computer, since the re-program is only really made for HD Eagle slip-ons, and not actually for the prthons or any other popular exhaust, you could buy a SERT or PCIII and do it yourself using the pre-programmed codes that come with either of the above. And/or have a mechanic do this while on a dyno?

I would guess the warranty is all gone after the computer is tweaked with a tuner.

And finally, one person advised that just putting the Pythons slip-ons was not that dramatic in itself, so a re-program was not necessary. He said the computer will reset itself on its own and adjust after about 75 miles. HD doesn't want you to know this cause they like the $180 re-program fee.

HELP PLEASE...

Signed,
A confused newbie [&:]

I have an 05' and I had my dealer install the Stage I, Python slip-ons, and the re-map. I got %20 off the parts and they advised that any parts installed by them would not effect the warranty and those "add-ons" would also be covered.

I was mainly looking for a nice sound at a reasonable price and this set up did not disappoint. I really like the sound, definitely not quite, but not too loud. Since I have not ridden a stock bike, I can't give you an opinion about actual performance. If you are not looking for or planning major performance mods, the Stage I and slip-ons will be just fine. I don't know about an automatic computer reset, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Good Luck!

twohats,
I thought the same thing when I first rode my bike with the Pythons, but I very soon began to love the sound! I actually currently live in western MD, but was born in northern VA. I still ride in the Winchester area quite often. Ride safe.
