I have an 07 SG with a 103 kit put on by the dealer before I took delivery. Had no problems with it until late last year, it started eating starters and bendix's have had the starter replaced 4 times and bendix 3 times. Last week it happened again. When you try to start it acts as though the ignition time is off, so it kick backs on the starter and will even blow back through the air filter most of the time. Normally this will happen only on a cold engine or only ran about 10 minutes and shut down, after the engine warms up there isn't a problem normally.
I got tired of them just changing out starters and asked the dealer to look at it and find what the issue was and not just band aid it by changing starters. Well they still couldn't find a problem so they called HD tech and they told them to install manual compression releases. Now I know this is just another band aid to a problem they can't diagnose.
The only thing that happened in between when it was fine and the problems started was the throttle stop screw came loose and they adjusted it and lock tited it in position other than that nothing has been changed. I have a PCIII 103, two into 1 nothing special at all, has anyone had or seen a similar problem and what was done to cure it?
Same problem with my 2007 w/ 103 kit.
Mine is worse when the motor has been run. Kick back, grind, cluck and puke out blue smoke thru the intake. Dealer can't find anything. Thought it was too far advanced but not it. MoCo has advised some dealers of starter issues caused by excess powder coating under mounting bolts or something like that. They checked and smoothed mine but it still does it.
I have a friend that owns a auto electric shop, he rebuilds starters and altanators and things like that. He had is motor built up and was having starter troubles. He ended up putting a compresson release on his bike so it did not labor the starter when he would turn the bike over. That was his fix. With a built up motor you have to much compression and the starter does not have enough s##t behind it.
With Hds 103 kit the compression isnt that much higher ,at best it should be at least now what the 96 numbers were advertised as.Being that you have a pc111 was the tune done to both cylinders? What changes were made to the PC111 ignition timing after kit install?
Are you still using the stock battery? You might try one of the high power/high amperage batteries. I knocked out the starter clutch on my old EVO because of a bad battery.
Just a thought!
I had the same problem on my 08 SG. I took it to Wabash HD in Terra Haute, Indiana and the tech there explained to me that the start up timing wasn't right.
He told me that HD is not teaching the techs the correct way to time the 103ci motors. He did it his way and I have not had any starting problems in the last 3,000 miles. This is even after he put performance heads and pistons in my 103" and boosted the compression up to 10.5:1
My guess is you bike doesn't have the proper start up timing.
