The question my fellow riders was addressed to folks from southern california and if your not from here you really dont know traffic except those from Jersey and the tunpike and the bridges area. however the question was can you split with a wide bike?
I have a RoadKing with 38" chubbies and highway pegs set at the same width The trick is to imagine a hallway that fits your bike and if that hallway narrows slow down and stop if you have to but as soon as it re-widens go for it. For those who dont really get splitting you never will. But for those who need to just get somewhere in southern California then splitting becomes a must.

Wow, reading these post...I'm laughing my @ss off...I'm station over here in Okinawa, an Island that's only 65miles long and 15 miles wide at the widest point. With the population of like 1.15 million. I have an 07 Road king with 39" wide, 16" tall apes...and I have to split traffic or I'd still be sitting instead of typing...but the roads here aren't 8ft wide either...LOL! So, sometimes I have to pull the seat out of my **** when I get off....yeah...better than a Red Bull and vodka in the morning...For SURE!

Couldn't imagine splitting lanes in the US...us american's don't like competition on the highway...no sir..."better cut'm off or he'll get infront of you" is our motto! LMAO!!

Ride safe yall!

I Lane-SHARE everyday on my Streetglide. There is more than plenty of room. The only thing you should do is pay attention, but you're supposed to do that anyways.

I split traffic all the time at backed up traffic lights up here in the mountains where I live because several traffic lights are just around turns and folks coming down the hill from Lake tahoe that are drunk and pissed rear end all the time. So after I got good at it I have been lane splitting all the time 2-up with wife but only next to very slowly moving traffic or stopped traffic at lights. Someone else mentioned it already, I just stay relaxed, dont tense up and imagine a hall way, I drag my back brake and control my speed with the clutch friction it helps me stay straighter, with highway pegs down. It takes judgement with cars and trucks rear view mirrors and close distances to know when to just stop and wait until the hole opens up a bit more. And WATCH out for cagers that see you coming and start to close the lane on you. I had a young punk kid in a rice burner do that to me this summer when the wife was riding with me. I didnt panic, just slowed and creeped up to his door and yelled at the top of my lungs, "hey, azzhole" scared the crap out of him. I know that was a stupid response on my part but I was pissed that he endangered my wifes life and I was getting ready to kick a dent in his door. I am glad I got control of myself because that reaction would of only further placed both of us in more danger.

stepping on the gas.

What annoys me about lane splitting is when another "Splitter" rides right on your ***! Usually a crotch rocket.

I do it all the time on the UC. There's usually plenty of room, and most people will make room for you. It's safer than sittin' there waitin' to be hit in the rear by someone fiddling with their phone or radio. And no, I'm not crazy.

Split lanes every day in Detroit on my Ultra. Southfield freeway feels smoother at 100mph!
