Default 2007 FLHTC starter question ??????????

am i missing something here?? just rode 200 miles round trip to get a great buy on a starter but get the old one out and they aint the same. everything i see in the J&P catalouges show what i ended up with -a spline with no nose cone or gear.even tho many of the starters say they fit an 07 FLHT. the part must have changed for the 07 so be carefull when buying or ordering. anyone have similar experience???????????????

OK, I just had the same problem. If it sounds really hard to start...a big clunking sound (and it takes several times to start)....I know what is wrong. This is a known issue w/ Harley. It is coming from your primary side. Harley had to replace my entire primary to solve (hopefully) the problem. The compensator and of its adjoining parts are pitted. This causes the clunking sound because the sprockets in the primary can not engage properly; like skipping a tooth or 10. I have been having this problem since March. Finally, a rep from Milwaukee came to my dealership to figure out the problem. There are 5 '07s at Low Country HD in Charleston, SC with the same problem. They are aware of this issue. Go to your dealer and tell them that the entire primary side needs to be replaced, from the clutch basket, starter clutch, compensator, and all of the other parts. Have your dealer contact HD of Charlotte and they will give him the complete story.

dont scare me like that man. mines ouuta warranty as of august.

to update: J&P are fulla ****. they dont have a starter for an 07. let me correct that statement. they have the O.E. harley starter for 75.00 bbucks more than harley sells it for.

so......... i get my money back and walk next door to harley buy the starter (for 375)and ridfe home. forgot to ask the warranty. call em up. NO WARRANTY unless i have them install it. i tell ya between personal problems, health issues and the economy/work thang these ******** have put me in a dark place. if i have an issue with this starter its goin thru thier window and ill take a nice all exp paid vacation in the pokey. LOL

I agree it appears HD is really a pain when it comes to doing work yourself. They want to over charge you and then tell you you the warranty isn't any good because you installed the part yourself.

Does anyone know if HD issued a service bulletin or recall for the issue where the primary needs to be replaced? My buddy is having that issue with his 2007 softail.
