Default Wire Routing Question

I had my seat off today on my new '09 Road Glide and noticed that the two thick wire bundles that follow down either side of the middle tank trim from the bars weren't underneath the plastic harness down at the base of the tank but rather just laying on top of the tank. It sure looks like that plastic piece is designed to manage those wires (what else is it for?). Take a look at the pictures and let me know if you think the wires should be under that plastic piece or remain on top like they came from the dealer. What does this look like on your bike?

Much thanks!

That's the way it's been on both the Electra Glides I've owned.

Just to clarify guys...you're saying your wires just lay on top, like in my pictures? What do you make of that plastic piece that runs accross the width of the bottom of the tank that has humps on either side that looks to be in the perfect place to run those wires under? That piece isn't making any sense to me if it's not for the wires.

The wires are not being pinched, the seat covers them so it's really a non-issue in my opinion.

In fact, when I run my wires for the HID lighting to the battery and my oil temp sending unit wire, I'm running them underneath the tank trim piece and along side those visible wires.

I'd leave it the way it is. It could be the what seems to be notches and forms for the wiring may just be forms to allow to plastic to be more rigid with out more plastic material.

If you move the wiring harness (both of them) it may put un-due bends into the wiring as well as create a spot on the tank from the plastic covering of the wiring vibrating on the tank paint. MOCO could have figured out early and just re-routed wiring to how it is now and left the plastic form for some other reason.

I hear ya and believe me I'm not gonna lose any sleep over it but I am just curious. Seems like that plastic part would be there for a reason is all I'm saying.

Thanks for your thoughts Ram. That seems pretty reasonable to me. Since others are saying their bikes look the same way I now know I am not dealing with some weird anomoly just on my bike.

The wires I believe you are seeing are coming from the electric fuel pump within the fuel tank. And the fuel vapor vent tube connected to the console. With the console removed from an 08 SG, you can see how the wires and tube are run. Hope this helps.
