My '07 SG didn't have the SS installed when purchased, but I adding it about two months ago. I was tired of locking the bike every time I dismounted, and the SS nixes that requirement unless you want to lock the forks, which I normally don't do.
Instead of adding the $80 HD siren I purchased a $6 Radio Shack piezo siren, and it works fine. There is a thread here that describes how to install it. The advantage to the HD siren is that it is needed when using the HD remote, which is yet another option, but I am certain I won't be interested in that for the time being. The HD siren is also plug and play, whereas the RS version needs to be spliced into the bike's wiring harness.
I actually looked for a bike without the SS when shopping for a new bike, but I now much prefer the SS over not having it. I purchased it from Zanotti's for $100 off MSRP, and after adding the $6 for the siren and $37.50 to have it activated (required) by my HD dealer, I'm out much less money than had I purchased it as a factory option.
