I have the stock bars on my 04 RK and I don't like them. If I upgrade to the Heritage bars will I have to get longer cables and is it something I could do myself. I am decent at turning a wrench on some things but I am by no means a mechanic. I don't mind paying to have work done but I like to save a buck if I can do it myself.
All I've read about the Heritage bars are that they'll go right on with stock cables. Some say you'll need to "massage" the bend in the brake line, and others didn't do it.
Get a service manual, you'll be surprised at how easy it is to swap out the bars.
Part of my DIY bar swap should come in handy even though mines a different year RKC.
It's sad that the RK doesn't have some decent bars without having to buy more. That's why I didn't buy one, the seat or the bars just never were comfortable. I'll keep the Ultra!
I went with Wild1 chubby 518s check out there website. I went with chrome controls and changed to Stainless steel braided cables. Their website tells you exactly how much longer the cables will need to be. YOU CAN DO IT YOURSELF. Allow yourself plenty of time. You will have to extend the wiring in the bars as well ( no big deal). I beleive my cables are 4" over stock.
not to sure about the 04 RK but my husband put the heritage bars on my 08RKC and did not have to change anything. I'm 5'8" and they were just what I needed to make the bike more comfortable.
I had put the heritage bars on my 05 and the brake line was the only complication. You have to bend the line easy so you don't break it but the rest of the lines and wires will go easy! getting the bars off is easy and not too much time consuming or bolts that have to be removed.
Go with the chubbys w0508 you wont regret it, i got mine off ebay for 75$ didnt have to add the 4inch longer cables but i did they were only 45$ and 20 for a 1 piece clamp .AND THE BRAKE LINE WILL WORK IT JUST TAKES A LITTLE FINESSING OR A 6 PACK, AGAIN YOU WONT REGRET IT .
