I have a black RG and would like to turn the headers/exhaust and mufflers black. I have thought of sanding the chrome and spraying the system with high temp stove paint but not sure, anybody do this before or am I out of luck (alternatives welcome) thanks ahead Ben
I know alot of folks have done this in the Dyna forums. Definetly use something like a self etching primer after sanding. I believe most have use a flat black BBQ Grill paint. Do a search and specifically pick the Dyna forums and you'll find alot of info.
ive used the BBQ spray paint in the can. It's 1500 deg. I just thoroughly sanded my pipes and spray painted them. I don't recommend the etching primer. Ive found that the primer was good to use only on aluminum but not where there's a fluctuation between heating and cooling. im ol school and when I find what works for me. I stay with it. Also,... after spraying your pipes with the BBQ paint. Be extra careful when installing them into their positions. You want to void scratching them. Which they will easily do. It is not until they are exposed to the extreme heat. That the paint will set up. one scratch is where the heat seems to concentrate at and when it cools at that point. It will cause condensation and begin to rust.
its not as cheap as a can of spray paint but take it to a powdercoater and have them ceramicote it. Looks great and ultra durable plus if anything ever goes wrong you can take it back and have them warranty fix it. Its really not that expensive either. I had 9 pieces done for a $100 here in jacksonville.
I've done a car turbo exhaust manifold using TechLine Coatings Black Satin. The only thing is that it's better to preheat the piece and then cure it in an oven. You can shoot the coating with a touch up spray gun. Here are a few pics of the process.
I have also used Techline on both car and motorcycle exhausts. it is a great (and cheap) alternative to JetHot coating. i got an old stove off Craigslist for free and used it to do my Road King exhaust as well as some headers on my truck. they both have many miles on them and still look great!
Stove paint works perfect I have a Sportster with a black painted exhaust. You can paint right over the chrome I did and it works fine, if you get a scratch you just touch it up and it's as good as new.
The stuff I use is Thurmalox Stove Paint I order it on the internet, I've used it for years and it works very well.
