Am currently running SP Heavy in S. LA and no problems so far. Last winter I used Royal Purple 85w140 and also had no issues, but although not heated my garage rarely dips below 50 deg. even on the coldest winter nights, which for us is about 25 deg.

Frankly, I've used RP 75w90, RP 85w140, and RL SP Heavy on this bike and can't tell the difference. No difference in shifting or noise that I can ascertain. I only changed to RL because it was $4/qt. cheaper than RP from the same speed shop.

My mechanic put a fitting on my shifter so we could put anti-sieze grease in there. In your case, may have been something that got a "little stuck" in the many joints that go from shifter pegs to transmission.
It's ok after it warms up. Just really stiff before.

I'm still laughing on jmac's answer. I've been runinng Red Line products in my last two scoots here in Mi. Cold days just let it warm up a little.

Default I figured it out

If I run up through the gears 1 2 3, and back to neutral it does not stick

To add to what I've already posted, as someone mentioned earlier SPH has the consistency and color of Pepto Bismol, but RL claims it has the "same low fluid friction as an SAE 75W90." I surmise from that statement that is flows like a 75x90 gear oil when cold.

All this said, you aren't the only person to have had complaints about low-temperature sluggishness using RL SPH, so maybe there are issues in the HD tranny. I still haven't noticed any issues, but also can't tell any difference between SPH and Royal Purple 85w140 MaxGear, which is what I used prior to my last change to SPH. I may stick with RL because it is $4 cheaper than the RP from the same speed shop. Both are top-drawer products.

Haven't had any problems with the low temp riding. Except that I go so freakin' cold by the time I get home that I can't find neutral!

+1, never had an issue w/RLSPH. Scoot's in unheated shed, out alot in 10s, 20s, 30s degrees. Just let her warm up a few minutes before ya hop right on n go.
