I've got a similar kit on my Road King made by a Japanese company. I think it's got a safety feature that prevents the bike from being placed in first with the lever in the reverse position. But you'd have to be pretty out of it to forget to move the lever back.
About usage, I love it! The '09s are pretty high off the ground and heavy, and the passenger floorboards make paddling tough work. Like the OP said, it's great not having to have the wife get off the bike just to back it up. And no more worrying about where you park.
So how do we get in touch with this Japanese company?
baker makes the best product for reverse gear they work on the hd 6 speed transmission the quality is alot better then what champion offers you have a safty toggle switch you have to flip before the bike will go into reverse gear.after that switch is flipped you simpley tap down twice on the shifter it cost about 2500 with labor and comes with a warranty its a little more then the champion kit but it is stealthy and the quality is great you even get a new chrome tranny cover that says baker rs6 and no bulky shifter
