Default Question for Phil, and those from Texas.

I'm hauling 4 bikes down for a week of touring in Texas late next month. When hauling the truck & trailer down from Canada, where is it likely that I can drop the trailer and unload the bikes to get riding. Guess I don't know where the snow ends and the milder weather begins.

I was thinking Amarillo or something and ride the loops from there down to the coast and back up? Is this a resonable are to start riding from or is it riding weather North of there like Pueblo? Advice is appreciated. Maybe we can hook up for a ride and a few brews Phil?

G.

I dont know when you are coming, but amarillo is one of the coldes places in Texas. But snow is usually not more than an inch deep and lasts only 2 days. One time or two we had some real accumulation, but that is rare.Rid down to big bend area if you are going that far.Highway 337 and 338 is our version of the dragon. If you are ever my way, go to clarks barbecuse in tioga texas.its good.featured in Texas monthly many times. On a saturday you see about 50 bikes there.

Default Welcome to Texas

Amarillo is a bit north for most Texans in January. Coming from Canada you may find it a bit tropical.

Suggest aiming a bit further south of the hill country and base near Fredericksburg.
There are some hotels and eateries for day trips around the hill country.
You may want to take a day trip south of I-10 towards the Bandara - Leakey area.

Punching south will take you to the coast. Rolling from Corpus to South Padre can be fun too. Heading southwest towards Big Bend, Marathon/Alpine, Ft. Davis is a good ride too.

January and Feb is a mixed bag in Texas. Bring a rain suit.

GlideMan:

Tod here in Houston. We are having some interesting weather, so bring whatever you need to dress appropriately -- like leathers for the a.m. and p.m., rain gear, and layers. Today it was 71, but rainy. This coming weekend it is going to clear up, but temp's to be at a high of 65, low of about 48. And last week it snowed 3" here between Houston and Galveston. With regard to dropping the truck and trailer, call one of the larger hotels near your Texas "destination" / point of riding origin and see if you can leave them there. Most of the better places don't mind as long as you park them out away from the main parking area. I'd avoid malls and restaurants. Many even have security and will watch them for you if you spend a night inbound our outbound at their establishment.

If you draw a line from Lubbock east through Dallas and continue it to Longview, that is the wind / weather line roughly. Staying below that will probably keep you from having freezing temp's (or at least during the day), and the winds should be moderate to mild. the area that Ron suggested ^^^^^^^^^ is great for riding anytime of the year. Look up Leakey, Kerrville, Bandera, Utopia, Uvalde -- and check out the roads that connect them: 335, 336, 337, 16, 187. www.mapquest.com/maps?city=Leakey&state=TX should get you some idea of the great riding in the area. And check out D'Rose Inn in Leakey for your overnight stay. Tell Deb we here in Houston said "hello." (If you'd like more on the roads in Texas, PM me and I can fill you in, or go to www.ridetexas.com and see what awaits you there, too.) If you decide to go southwest to the Big Bend area (great riding, but not very populated) you'll have to plan ahead for food, motel, and gas!!! And the temp's can be pretty brutal at night, as you are in the high desert! But well worth the trip!!!!!!

Hope that helps -- and if you get over near Houston, give me a shout! I'm always ready to swing a leg over the ol' steel horse and ride......

We do have some odd weather here but it never hangs around very long. I'm North of Dalhart ( just East of Sedan, NM). It's going to be sunny and 60 Christmas day.

We also have Palo Duro Canyon, just outside of Amarillo in Canyon, TX. I guess it depends on ones definition of riding weather. I plan to putt over to Clayton, NM Christmas day.

Actually the deep breath would be required when passing through Hereford, TX...That smell indirectly makes my bike payment. Thats a puny feed lot on the West side of Clayton.

Every place has it's own appeal - the ride to Clayton Lake is very nice; go a bit North and your in Raton.

Big Bend is a nice place to visit this time of the year, but take some extra gas along with you... Gas stations are few and far between around there... When I'm driving through there in my Jeep, I usually carry about four 5-gallon tanks with me just-in-case... Of course, the best places to visit in Big Bend require an offroad vehicle (i.e. an ATV or a dirt bike), but it makes for a nice ride anyway... Haven't been there in a few years, but the last time I was there, the concept of cell phone reception was completely non-existent... Not even analog signal back then -- forget about digital...
