Nothing wrong with the Heritages but the SG won my heart and if I were ever think of trading, it would be another bagger but a RG this time unless they bring back the RK Custom which I doubt they will.
I like the Heritage rather than the batwing dressers, but that's me. I currently drive a 09 Road King Classic, which has a standard dresser windshield but when I think about my 06 Heritage Classic, I miss it. That ST handled much easier than the RKC to my seat of the pants notion. But you get what you want. You only have to please yourself and should ride what you like. Another batwing will be fine, as long as I don't have to have it.
My first Harley was an 05 Heritage. I thought I couldn't like a bike better than that one until I traded up to my 08 SG. I loved both bikes, but the sg is much more comfortable, especially on the long trips.
I put 22,000 miles on my Heritage in 3 seasons and 12,000 miles on the sg in one season.
The trips get longer with the stops fewer and farther between on the sg. I would never go back to a softail.
I enjoy my 08 Heritage and can't bring myself to go to a fairing bike yet but if I ever do it will likely be a SG. For one thing it fits me the best off the floor and for another, I just think it looks the best.
All in all I think you get more bike for your money with a tourer. You pay a premium for the Heritage look.
Throw a different seat on it, maybe some different bars and it might fit you as well as the Heritage.
i had a electra glide standard before...sold it cuz i lost interest in riding. wanted to start riding again and shopped bikes. i thought i wanted to get a street glide or an ultra if i went with a touring bike.
but, i always liked the heritages. the thing that did it most for me was the fit and feel of the heritage. i like the way it feels cuz i sit more down in the bike. i rode an '08 ultra for a bit but just didn't have the feel for it like i did the heritage. sat on a street glide many times (didn't ride one though) but the heritage was so much more comfortable.
so, i bought my friend's '02 which pretty much had all the major things done to it i'd do. for me, it was much cheaper and it just felt better.

good luck
Yes these decisions do suck but there was a time in my life where I couldn't afford to even consider this and I am glad now that I have to make a choice but it's going to be very difficult. I am going to rent the SG again. I spoke with the dealer today and they said they would change out the windshield for me when I rent the SG. The stock shield threw my ahead around too much. It would have been better to have no fairing at all. I don't know if it is my seating position or not but I could barely see the road when I was doing 80 mph b/c of the buffeting. With the windshield off the Heritage it wasn't nearly as bad. I really like the SG and the Heritage and figure that I have to try the SG with a different screen to be sure of my choice
First thing I did with my SG is to replace the 4" wind deflector (even HD doesn't call it a windshield) and install a 7" CeeBailey's windshield. I can see over it just fine and it blocks most of the wind. I'm only 5'8" so your mileage may vary.

Will it really change the mileage much?? Did the 7 inch deflector help?
I agree that the stock windshield on the sg is worse than no shield at all. I tried a couple of different ones and now run the 8" clearview with a recurve. I can see over the shield and get good wind protection from it. It is the first bike I have ever had with a windshield I look over instead of through. I like it much better, escpecially in the rain. The visibility is much, much better looking over instead of through the windshield.
