Default lesson learned

I went for a ride today with my new bike. I checked the fuel guage and it read a half a tank of the dealers gas...great I'm on my way..I get down the road just befroe getting on the highway and while I'm passing the gas station, gauge reads almost 3/4..so i figure I'll fill up at my destination 60 mi up the interstate. I go about 30 miles and gauge reads empty so of course I tap on the guage and the only thing that happens is the little "you need fuel, moron, light" comes on. I decide I'll get off at the next exit 2 mles away. There is a sign that says fuel and services..what it didn't say it was another 5 miles to fuel. I barely made it...Anyway i have now learned i will always leave with a full tank.

I ALWAYS set my trip odometer when i fill up. The gas gauge is good, but the odometer gives you a better idea on when to fill up.

I don"t even know if my low fuel light works, I never let it get that far. I use one trip odometer for fuel and the other for oil changes. That fuel gauge is only good for filling a hole in the panel.

I am usually good for approximately 200 miles per tank. The odometer typically reads 150 @ 1/2 tank, 180 @ 1/4 tank & light comes on very soon after that ~ 190 miles. Time to look for gas ASAP.

The way the float is installed in teh tanks, the 1st "1/2 tank" lasts forever & the 2nd "1/2 half" goes REALLY FAST!

When your needle is on 1/2, that means it is reall 1/4. goofy toilet plunger they use in the gas tank to measure it with. use your odometer instead.

That freakin' gas gauge is as good as the air temperature gauge on Ultras.

I coasted into a station last summer on "E" - had to walk her 50 feet.

Maybe somebody else makes a decent gas gauge???

The fool gauge is not something to be trusted. It is marginal at best.

Best way is to use the trip odometer and start looking for fuel about the 150 mile mark. On a trip that is about two hours and it is time for a break.

I never looked into the tank when i picked up the bike, but the gauge read full. I was at 120 miles on the gauge at the time of light coming on. I thought a full tank should take me to 160 or so. When i filled up I set the trip od. and will monitor that. Bike only has 185 miles on it now. What should I be getting for approx. mpg now and when broken in.
Thanks,
Rick

I had the same probs when I got my 05 FLHTI back in Aug 04 -- the first 1K service they had to adjust the float - - the 2500K they replaced it.....yep it's CRAP - -

nice to look at, but functional...no

I reverted to the days of my Sporty - - fill up every 100 miles -- ----
