it is supposed to fit over the stock ring....if you loosen the screw that holds the stock ring on just a smidgen the new ring will fit nicely. i don't have a gap in mine. just play with it a little bit, it'll tighten up i promise...
J&P Cycles sells a replacement trim ring for the headlight. It replaces the stock trim ring. I don't have one, but others that do say it fits nice and tight without the gap. Part number is #3100356 @ $29.99
I installed an aftermarket headlight bulb (clear lens with optics) and it was a little bit smaller than factory headlight bulb and suprise suprise no more gap.

I did that for about 2 hours... Still isnt right... Like I said in my post I even took the trim ring totaly off and tried to fit it on my bench and it was still messed up? Im pretty good when it comes to wrenching on things too... Just wondering what bike you have and what year is it???
