Question Why are they called Novelty helmets...

if they have the DOT sticker?

Don't understand. If they did not have the sticker, would seem more rational to be called "Novelty".

Cause it's not a real DOT helmet, just a sticker.

Okay.... Then how/what is specified as a helmet which meets DOT specs? Can anyone put a DOT sticker on it and say it is DOT certified? Maybe I shouldn't ask. We already have enough Gov't and regulations.

You can get the stickers that say DOT, but the LEO's know the fakes. If they were to look, it says it inside the helmet as well.

Last question. Doesn't "truth in advertising" play some role here? How can they market the helmet with a DOT sticker? How do I as the average consumer recognize what is truly DOT certified? Price? Expensive is certified, cheap is not?

Is this helmet sitting on a shelf in a store with the DOT sticker on it? If it is, in my state that's illegal. Because the helmet is not street legal.

one easy way to tell a DOT helmet is to look inside and see if it has a "hard" Styrofoam inside, if its just a shell and some soft pad and cloth its a fake. but if it has a hard Styrofoam liner it is most likely DOT.

I don't thing you can openly advertise a "NOVELTY" helmet with a DOT sticker. Like others said, you can put a sticker on a novelty helmet but it still doesn't make it legal. I would predict someone will be knocking on the company's door with a search warrant and folk will be getting arrested if they are actually doing it. As for price, the cheapest DOT cert. helmet I have seen was $65.

I've seen MANY novelty helmets for sale both in stores and online, and every time there is a disclaimer that states that the helmets are not to be used as a safety device when riding, as they are not approved by the DOT. I've never seen a novelty helmet being sold as a DOT-approved helmet.

And you never will.

A DOT legal helmet that's almost as thin as a novelty...is only a mouse click away!
