In addition to the drivetrain the Ultra has a lot of Electrical items to consider.
If dependability is a big concern to you don't buy it.
If you want one to tinker with and ride shorter trips I'd say 4-5K is plenty.
Personally I woud not buy a bike with that many miles unless I was completely comfortable with doing all the required work, including engine rebuild. I'm ok with easy stuff, but I don't have the time or knowledge for more advanced work, so I would end up having to find someone to do the work for me. For me it doesn't sound like a good deal, but it may be ok to others. If so, offer him 6K, and work from there.
I kinda like knowing that the majority of the miles on the bike were mine. Bought my standard w/ 4600 on it. Just enough time to have the previous owner buy a bunch of chrome and accessories, radio etc, decide he didn't like it and sell it to me for $13000. Yeah, it's a lot more$, but I feel better knowing all the maintenance was done on time etc, and that at 22500 miles, most of em are mine. Look at Standards, they're usually cheaper and with the proper add ons can get you where you wanna go in as much style as anything else.
IMO it's still winter and a lot of bikes aren't on the market yet. I'll bet there will be newer bikes w less miles on them for that price or lower in the spring. They improved the cam issued but I don't know the year but that's easy to find out.
You better pass on this one. Spend a little more and get a new, or newer model with less miles. $8500 is asking too much for that many miles on it. IMHO.
100,000 miles is way on the downside of engine life and other components. Just pass on this one. Also, asking prices are often done by dreamers. You can usually discount them by twenty percent as a starting point. The bikes that sell, sell for much less.
my dealer just sold a 2000 roadking with 106,000 on it for 9600.00
engine was split checked and back together by dealer sold in 3 days after hittin floor.
Bro at work just bought a 99 ultra with 87000 on it for 7800.00. real nice runner. guy that had it took damn good care of it.
guess its all about what you want......my neighbor rides a 98 ultra with 145000 on it no issues had it since day one
Cheap, used HD bikes are in favor with the market now. New bikes priced at MSRP+ are really out of favor now. Funny how just a year or two can change things...
