Default WOW, Explain this one!

February 2009 issue of "American Bagger" magazine

In the "TECH" article, they take a stock 2009 Street Glide and do a step by step install of D&Ds Boss Kit which is comprised of D&D Boss slip on mufflers and a Zippers high flow air cleaner assembly. The end result is a Dyno run that shows an increase of roughly 7 H.P. and 5 Ft. Lbs of Torque. The dyno run sheet is published and here's the interesting part.

No modification was made to the EFI itself, no aftermarket controller and you know what? The a/f ratio was good throughout the entire dyno run. The ratio barely went over 15 between 3000 and 3800 RPMs and I mean barely. The rest of the RPM range was at normal, between 14 and under 15.

Does this tell us that we can do these mods without installing EFI add on computers? It certainly seems to. To me, this article is eye opening... For those of us who don't want to jeopardize our factory warranties, maybe this is the answer. I just ordered new slip ons, not I gotta' look for one of these Zipper air filter assys.

I think this is really good news in black and white (for once) as it demonstrates that the a/f remains near or at stock, even with the mufflers and high flow a/c.

I really didnt want to modify my EFI with a controller. I know they have their added benefits but technically render the bike illegal (emmissions) and could void your factory warranty too. MOCO isnt in a position be be generious now which adds to the concern.

That's true the EFI will compensate for the changes, but you are still going to run HOT! You have to install a management sys. to change the ratio to run cooler.

Correct, but no hotter then a stock bike with no mods. Thats the point, for those of us who dont want the controller, we can still go ahead with mufflers and a/c too without detrimental effects to the bike. The a/f is no worse then a stock bike.

I dont think their talking about the bike running HOT.If you can have a/c and slip on mufflers without a fuel control who cares if it runs HOT its going to without them anyway.

I agree with what you say that it should run fine. And it will.

I had trouble with a couple of bad PCIII's so i returned them. I ran around with a AC kit and true duals for about 1500 miles and it ran fine. But after i put a new PCIII on the bike ran so much better. Everywhere from the idle in traffic to running at high RPMS. (FYI I pulled the plugs before the new PCIII and they were white as can be meaning it was running hot.)

I can tell you one of the local Indy's had a 08 glide and ran it with pipes and A/c while waiting on his Power Commander and after a toy run in December he said his pipes were glowing red. I know the PC V cooled mine down.

Whats the ball park price of the PC-V? I may get it in the spring in spite of my warranty concerns.. I have installed an Oil Cooler and already switched over to full synthetic oil, so first I'm going to see just how hot the bike runs. harley maded these bikes to run hot, at 14.7 a/f ratio which is street legal. So, if the ratio remains in the 14.7 range, how bad could it possibly be? SURE adding a controller makes it run cooler, but it also makes the bike tecnically illegal and can likely void your factory warranty. I may live with factory range a/f if I can do the mufflers and live with it like that.
