Default FLHRC(Road King Classic) Housing Switch

I have a question that I hope someone can answer for me. I have an '07 Road King Classic and am interested in chroming out my hand controls. I found a kit that is listed in the '09 Harley catalog that includes everything. The various part numbers for this kit for the three different models for which it is offered is.

1. 56862-07 $519.95
Fits ’05-’07 FLHR and FLHRS models.
2. 56863-07 $538.95
Fits ’05-’07 FLHTCU and FLTR models.
3. 56861-07 $534.95
Fits ’05-’07 FLHT, FLHTC, and FLHX models.

I have talked to a particular dealer extensively about whether or not this kit, in any of its forms, will work on my bike since mine has cruise control. The cruise control option has a resume / set switch on the right side of the bar and an on / off switch on the left. The dealer informed me that he strongly believes that option two above will work on my bike. He says that I will have to use one of the black hole plugs from each side of my current housing to block the extra port that the housing in option two will have. I have looked at my bike in its current form and have found that there is indeed a hole plug on each side of my current switch housing. To figure out if I should just order the parts separately, I checked out the switch housing that Harley offers for the Road King. Yet again, it is unclear as to which one I should use. It looks to me as though it should be the one for the FLHTCU AND FLTR. Here is the part numbers offered for just the switch housing.

70222-96B
Fits '96-later VRSC™, XL, XR, DynaŽ, SoftailŽ and FLHR models. Does not fit FXSTDSE and FLHRSEI2 models.
MSRP US $139.95

However, it does not look like this one will fit a Road King Classic with cruise control.

Ordering the kit is over one hundred dollars cheaper. However, I need to know:

1.) Which part number for the kit, if any, will fit my FLHRC?
2.)If I get the kit are there any additional parts needed?
3.)Is there a switch housing that is sold independently that will fit my FLHRC?

The last part of my question is, how hard of a job will this be to do on my own? I am not very mechanically inclined but I can follow directions. Is there a good guide or write up out there that goes through how to install the master cylinder reservoir, the chrome switch housings, switch caps, and chrome levers. The simpler the better. Maybe even in the form of a pop up book? Oh, also, how many hours of labor should I expect a dealership to charge me if I decide to chicken out and have them do it?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

56862-07
Models equipped with cruise control require the additional purchase of Lower Right Switch Housing P/N 71612-96, Set/Resume Switch Cap P/N 71729-03, and Mode Select Switch Cap P/N 71728-03.

Thanks so much for the information I really appreciate it. I cannot tell you how exhausting it was in working with this dealership in trying to find the right parts and information. How did you come up with it so quickly? I do have a couple of other quick questions.

You mention that I need the lower right switch housing. Do I need any additional housing part on the left for the cruise control on/off switch if I get part number 56862-07? I think I am going to leave my switch caps all black. If that is the case, I assume that I do not need any of the chrome caps you mention above; please correct me if I am mistaken.

Lastly, how difficult of a job is all of this? Is it possible for someone with little mechanical experience who can follow a well scripted plan? Any suggestions on where I can find such a plan or even good tips on doing this type of job?

Smile Save Money On Hand Control Chrome Kit!!!

I found out that the Lower Right Switch Housing you mention above (71612-96) is $47. I also learned that there is a Lower Left Switch Housing needed for a Road King Classic with cruise control (71613B-96) which is also $47. These parts are needed if your order the option 1 kit as listed in my original post above. However, the two lower switch housing parts (71612-96 and 71613B-96) are included in the hand control kit for the FLHTCU and FLTR (option 2 in my original post).

If you have a Road King Classic and you want to chrome out your hand controls, levers, master cylinder and switch caps, get the option 2 kit for the FLHTCU listed above. Also, it almost $200 less to buy the kit than to piece all of the parts together.

Please let me know if you have any questions. it took a lot of time and research to figure this out. I would like to thank Dawg for pointing me in the right direction.

Wow, lot of good info here.

I can turn a wrench, but electronics is something I leave to the experts. I'd probably let the pros do the switch/swap for me. Just my .02.

To answer your questions concerning having dealer do it...........I suggest you price all your hd parts from Zanotti's(once you get the correct part #'s)

I'd then offer to let the dealer do it for labor plus Zanotti's discounted parts cost.

Your total should not exceed Zannoti's parts cost plus 150 bucks dealer labor. If your dealer balks, do it your self using Zanotti's parts.

Your dealer needs to see/hear that you are shopping his parts and labor, so offer him the job on your terms. The worst he can say is "No".

Its really not all that difficult.....the manual talks you through the whole thing. Its not really an electronic thing to do either......pretty much disassemble old housings and reassemble into new housings......

The manual you are referring too is the parts installation manual? Or do you mean that I will need the service manual for my bike as well?

Are the chrome levers and master reservoir as easy as the switch housings?

Smile Dealer Labor Cost

Thanks for the advice. I have never used Zanotti before so I will definitely check it out.

I have spoken to two dealers and both have told me that they would charge me about three hours labor. I live in Nothern VA and the labor rates here are about $95 / hour. Of course they also are sure to include additional shop fees as well. If I can get this done for $150 by the dealer I think I will opt to have them do it. However, I do not think I can get them to do it for about 1.5 hours of labor.

Also, the cheapest way to get the parts needed to complete this job for a Road King with cruise control is to simply order the complete kit for the FLHTCU/FLTR(part number 56863-07). This kit includes the lower left (71613-96B) and lower right(71612-96) switch housings for the two cruise control components. You may want to consider getting the polished, stainless steel banjo bolts as well. You will also need a bottle of brake fluid. These should be all the parts one needs to complete this job. Now it is just a matter of finding good installation instructions; preferably with pictures! :-)
