Last weekend, while in Daytona traffic, my motor got hot enough to shutdown 1 cylinder. No biggy, it's done this many times. But the odd part was that I had the clutch lever pulled in (clutch disengaged), yet the bike kept trying to pull me. I had the front brake on...and finanly it shut off like I had let the clutch out with no throttle. I fired it back up and traffic started moving so it didn't occur again.
Today we're down there again getting ready to pull into Rossmeyers and it does the same thing. Engine's getting hot, 1 cylinder shuts off, and the disengaged clutch is trying to pull me. When I say disengaged, I mean I have the lever pulled back fully. Hmmm...So the rest of the day it didn't get that hot, so sitting in traffic with the clutch lever pulled, it didn't do it.
So...what the heck is that? It didn't start doing this till my tune, which I think is just a coincedence, but still this is not good.
After looking over some threads here it seems I've got a bad case of clutch drag. But what's odd is that it only occurs when the motors hot...not cold as most folks describe it.
I'll ask my dealer for clues, but if you guys/gals come up with something, throw it my way...
It would be cool to know what folks prefer in the way of primary and transmission lubricant. Harley says use Syn 3 in everything. I've used formula and spectro in the tranny and Amsoil in the primary as well as motor. Not impressed with the Spectro as I'm having issues finding neutral and the Amsoil in the primary gives some clutch drag when cold but not the issues when hot as described above. I may be selling the spectro short as I'm not hearing much fifth gear whine and the neutral issues could be due to clutch drag. If anyone has found a truly good combination lets hear about it!
May be running too lean, shud not be in parade mode(shutting down) like it is. Good idea to change to synthetic in the primary(20w50) auto chain tensioner may be self adjusting too tight. I WAS AN AMSOIL USER FOR MANY YEARS AND SWITCHED TO MOBILE 1 SYN IN ALL 3 HOLES ON MY 07 E/GLIDE. MUCH BETTER PERFORMANCE FROM CLUTCH AND MOTOR IS QUIETER. I AM CONVERTED TO MOBILE 1 V TWIN. EASY TO GET AT THE LOCAL AUTO ZONE STORE IN STOCK AND THEY CAN GET YOU A KN OIL FILTER NEXT DAY, 10.95 A QT OFF THE SHELF AND THE OIL FILTER IS A K171C 11.95 IN CHROME.
What drives me nuts is when my bike is shut off and in gear I pull in the clutch but you can't push it around? Is this just clutch drag? I think everything is adjusted right? Whats up with this?
Sounds like your cable has stretched from the traffic and/or your clutch plates are warped. Does it lurch into gear at a stop? Does the bike move if you try to start it in gear with the clutch in? If it got real hot as you said and were in heavy traffic especially 2 up, you also probably wore the clutch material off, it get hotter then warped the plates. The cable could have lost its adjustment and not disengaging the clutch fully. Ck your free play in the lever, but that would have the affect all the time.
