I know there are a bunch of threads, mostly outdated. I thought I'd share my comment on the headlamp visor trim ring for an 09 on a batwing fairing.
First off. The ring is too small. It does not fit all the way around the stock ring, as the directions suggest it is supposed to, even with the ring completely removed, it's about 1/4" short of fitting around the stock ring.
It looks like when it was made, it was sized to fit around the headlight bucket assembly without the stock ring.
I messed with it for hours trying to fit it over the stock ring, and its simply not correct.
Solution? I used heavy duty weather stripping (as recommended in a different thread) and abandoned the stock ring and secured the trim directly to the headlamp bucket. No rattles, fits good, no gap.
Will contact the dealer for comment, there is only 1 part number for the touring bikes for this part so I'm interested to see what they have to say.
Ya know, I like the look of the "uprade" headlamp ring but have read too much negative about it to put myself through the torture and aggrevation. Much less, pay for it no less.
The HD directions tell you to install it over the stock ring? That sounds like nonsense. Way back when on my 2001 softail I installed a new trim ring and removed the original ring and installed the new extended ring right on the bucket no problems and fit nice and tight you actually had to spread the new ring out a little to go over the stock bucket then install the hardware no problems. I know its a differant design but it just seems a little weird to go over the old one. Again just my two cents worth. Let us know what the dealer says.
I agree its odd. I had a softail as well, put visors on passing lamps, turn signals, headlamp, peice of cake, fit great.
The design utilizing the original ring would be fine if the visor peice fit around the ring completely, but it leaves about a 1/4" gap at the bottom when tightened.
The visor itself is too large to fit around the bucket on its own, hence using the weather stripping, which so far seems to hold up just fine.
Haven't had a chance to reach my parts guy at the dealership...
I just instaled one the other day on my 02 EGC with no probs. it was a B#tch getting it over the stock ring (had to spread it open) but it tightened up with no gaps. I wouldn't think there would be a difference in the diameter of the headlights....but what do i know? had one on my RKC also with no gaps that i remember. seems like there's be a an easier way.
