The "bunch of rocks" sound is pinging, which is a result from lugging, but can be from other factors. Lugging put undue stress upon the engine by not generating enough rpm to sustain a certian speed EFFICENTLY. Plus you use more gas, beacuse the engine needs more fuel to sustain the speed by not being in the "sweet" spot of the cam. You can go 45mph in 6th and that would be lugging. I use a mph as a guideline, you should be able to feel the motor hold back when you accelerate, if you hear pinging, drop down a gear.
The 5th gear whine has nothing to do with "lugging your motor" however the "lugging your motor" and "fifth gear whine" issues became intertwined after the '07s were introduced and prior to the introduction of IDS. This was the time period when Harley was going out of business becasue they introduced the worst transmission ever or so it was reported by several forum members. IDS did away with the "rocks in a can" issue and reduced the 5th gear whine and heavy weight tranny oil almost eliminated the 5th gear whine.
The '09's are being touted as possibly the best touring bike ever built by Harley and yes they have the same 6 speed cruise drive including straight cut 1st and 5th gears and IDS comes as OE. Interesting how time changes everything.
I have noticed a different "sound" (I guess it must be a whine?) in 5th. If there is one in 1st I haven't heard it. Taking mine in Saturday for it's 1000 mile service and switching to syth. and will see what it sounds like out of that.
If you just change to synthetic in the tranny the whine could actually get louder. Don't just change to synthetic, change to a heavier synthetic gear oil (85w140, Redline Shockproof Heavy, etc) in the tranny.
Just a suggestion. Search this forum for tranny posts and you will find many many many posts from people that had success making this change. Just my .02.
Ive got 650 miles on my 3 week old bike and when Im riding it starts to have a whine in 4th gear and then louder in 5th and then disappears in 6th gear...1,2,3 has no whine either...
Is this normal? It sounds like my Dads Goldwing with a driveshaft....
My 07 Street bob with the 6 gears....I remember a small whine for a little while but it went away....
Sounds like the same whine that the 2007's have. People panicked and wanted to buy aftermarket transmissions! The Baker 6 speed, I believe. Mine is still going strong. Use heavier gear oil.

Yeah, brings back memories! My IDS did away with some driveline lash but did nothing for my whine. Heavier gear oil and a Rinehart exhaust helped hide the whine!
