The only downside to the modular helmets are the increased weight even over the full face. I have a Nolan N102 and can immediately feel the difference from my full face and this helmet.

My last two helmets have/are Nolan (modular). They're just so much more versatile than a full face. I just don't ever see myself going back to full face.........I'll be staying with the flip face with blue tooth integrated.

i have a symax and an arai ff. i wear the symax most of the time because i wear glasses and it's much easier. living in FL, the symax is cooler in summer, it's also easier on and off. For the long trips, i use the arai

Default Caberg Modular

I've owned a Caberg since I first learned of their existence four years ago. Caberg's are a bit hard to find but can be had. As to safety, they exceed DOT ratings by passing the extremely stringent European safety standards. They have metal to metal bindings on the chin portion. Also, the chin mechanism can be removed and the hemet converted to a 3/4. The Caberg has an internal flip-down sun screen similar to fighter pilot helmets. IMHO this is the best helmet on the market today. Read more info from a BikeWorld review at...

Good luck

I have the Harley modular made by KBR.....excellent helmet, look for a modular that has metal hardware for the hinges and latches. The main reason that Snell does not rate modulars is that Snell has not developed realistic testing for them yet. Like everything else, as they become more popular and more people start requesting a Snell rating, then Snell and the manufacturer's will spend the money to develop the specialized testing equipment needed for modular helmet testing.

Give your son an "attaboy" for wanting to be careful, wanting a full face helmet instead of a 1/2 or 3/4, and considering the diff between the FF and modular.

If there was anything inherently dangerous about a modular, they wouldn't still be around because of the liability issues. My next helmet will be a Caberg modular for the reasons mentioned previously.

And do give your kid the "attaboy."

How is it that people say that the Modular helmets (I own an HJC Symax II) will NEVER get SNELL approval when I have an Open Faced HJC Helmet (Model FS-3) that IS Snell approved?

The open face has no chin bar at all and yet that can get the Snell approval? Go figure.....
