The air temp guage is not very accurate on my classic and I never use it so I thought I would replace it with a compass. Does anyone know where you can find one that will fit?
Harley make a compass that fits directly into the air temp gauge slot, BUT forget it!! It is the biggest piece of junk I have bought for my Harley. Doesn't work worth a !!!. Others have had the same experience. Can be as much as 180 degrees off and almost never agrees with my GPS. Note, I have followed the instructions and do not carry anything metalic near it in the saddle bag
Too much magnetic interference up there in the fairing no doubt for a working compass. I agree though that the temp gauge is just about worthless. I mounted my GPS on my bars and it hides the temp gauge from my view, so that is good!
I've been thinking about doing the same thing. I have used compasses on boats that get calibrated for the mounting location (compensate for metal in the dash).
Ritchie and Brunton are the two manufacturer's that keep coming up.
I have the HD compass.Actually I have two.Had one on my 05 EG Standard 4 years and 30000 miles and never once had to have it reclaibrated.Flawless.
Got a new RG and have the HD compass on it two.Only 500 miles so far and its perfict to.
The one thing you have to keep in mind is that theres a small unit that gets mounted next the the right saddle bag.You have to keep big metal objects out of that saddle bag.Follow that simple rule and the HD unit will outlast the bike.
Wouldn't have a bike without one.
