I'm in the market for a new bike. I originally had my mind set on a late model Road King Custom. I've found a 2007 with only 2000 KMs and about $3000 worth of mods (which aren't that important to me) and another 5 years left on the extended warranty. The bike is mint.
After reading a bit about the 2009, it appears they made some significant changes to the model line. I know I can't get a Custom, but my intent would be to buy a regular Road King and change it to get the look I want.
At the end of the day, it would cost me about 3500$ more for the 2009 without any mods or changes assuming I paid MSRP for the new one, and the buyers asking price for the 2007. Are the changes to the 2009 worth the extra cash? I'm not taking into account any negotiating (which I will do, especially if I wait until the 2010 are in the show room).
Have you gone for a demo on either? I'd suggest you get on both to do a comparison then you'd know the difference is a lot. I was really tempted to switch my 05' custom for the new street glide but I'm getting a new apartment so I can't afford it right now. If I could, I definitely would. It handles a lot better and it's load carrying capacity is also improved. Heat management is also improved a lot too.
I was in the same boat as you. But the 09 is a great bike. There are a few cosmetic changes that you can make to get the "custom" look that you like. Floor boards, lower it, front fender swap, etc.
I too was in the market for an used rk but at the end of the day i loved the wider rear tire and new frame and liked the new cosmetic changes like no fender lip light on the rear, lisence plate below the tail ligiht and etc. i got a good deal on my 09 and it just made no sense to by used for what i wanted to do to it.
I have an 07 and i love it. Any upgrades a harley owner makes are giveaways to the next owner so that is a consideration. There are so many advancements in the new frame, motormounts, driveline, gas tank, etc. etc. If i was in your situation i would get the 09 without a second thought. Theres just too much in them to overlook.
I had the same dilemma. Was originally looking at used RK/RKC. Cosmetics are easy (if costly sometimes) to change. The 09 improvements can't be had at any reasonable cost. The wider rear tire, new frame, modified exhaust, suspension, one more year of 96" engine refinements, etc made the price difference worth it. Around here, late model big twins are on the market used for no more than a couple thousand less than a new 09.
