I like having the different sound in 5th gear. It helps as an indicator for what gear I'm in. I don't see it as a whine; it's just a different sound. It is not a problem; the gears work just fine. For those who can't stand a few sounds from their bike should take a look at the Honda Gold Wing and that nice sewing machine sound.
Since extreme heat is not and issue within these tranny's synthetic is not absolutely necessary and as mentioned by the previous comment(s) a good heavy non-synthetic gear oil will do the trick, and as well it should, we are talking about gears. I only heard the noise on my '07 in the early days but, once I read some articles on strait cut gears (which are absolutely fine gears) and then came to learn about the true characteristics of the Synth3 (just fine for the engine and primary) that as mentioned throughout this Forum 85w-140w in Summer and knock it down to a XXw-90w in the cooler months and you will never concern yourself with this issue again.
i'm riding my second six speed harley. and i use royal purple 85-140 in the trans, and notice no noise out of the ordinary. if using lightweight oil like syn 3, then i can see where the noise could come from.
Apparently enough people complained about the 5th gear whine. All 2010 6 speeds are Helical cut for 5th.
Mine is noisy but who cares. It will probably outlast me.
i've actually never noticed it. i use 75-140 synthetic in the trans, that may have something to do with it. i must be just very lucky and gotten a bike without the whine.
