I liked the info, never be afraid to share your horror stories! It might prevent one from happening to our brothers!
So where is this sensor exactly, so I will know?
As for him fixing it easy and fast. Well, I dunno what you do for a living, but I'm sure you can relate something you have to do in your line of work that is a "no brainer" but still charge a hefty fee just for your "knowledge" of the diagnosis and quick fix.
It's all business and you got in cuz you had an 'insider'
a friend of mine had the same thing happen to his 03 wide glide and they cleaned the sensor and all was good and this all happened in the first 1,000 miles of him riding of ciourse he is a wanna be so it took him 11/2 years to get that 1,000 miles on it.
I do recall a thread a few months back about the re-set button, but had no personal experience with that type of trouble.
Obviously it eventually worked itself into a bigger problem.
In the future I hope the grey matter will be able to recall this good bit of info and at least be a starting point for trouble shooting...
The speed sensor is located belw the Y pipe on the right hand side of the bike ( my 02Ultra at least ) just above the engine oil fill plug/cap, it is about 1/8'' thick, oval shaped and held in place by a 3/16'' allen screw (not sure of the size)
It is a tight fit, but will pop out with some wiggle type action.
It has what looks like a magnet on the inside of it and a wipe with a clean rag/cloth will do the trick .
It that doesnt work then its a simple buy from dealer and replace it by following the wire.
Anyways, good outcome from a possible stranding on a hwy .
Rob
Might also want to check the front engine mount, My Y pipe cracked and the dealer told me that it was caused by a bad front engine mount, I bought one for mine and found that the mount was ok but the Bolts had fallen out. So if you have too much movement on the front mount it will cause the Y pipe to crack/break
