I saw on another thread where a poster stated he bought another stock wheel to mount a new tire on for longer distance but continued to squeeze miles out of the older tire. This is not something I would ever consider but I guess it works for him.
yeah, i'm gonna disagree here. with the 09 and up, the tire is a 'muti-compound' tire and has considerably more tire life than the older tires. i am on my second set of tires (first replacement) and have 25,000 miles on my bike. changed the first set out at 20,000 before a long road trip, not because i had to, but more for peace of mind.....

seems the old 2 rear, 1 front tire rule doesn't apply any more. my front tire had a lot of tread left, but was badly cupped so i replaced them both at the same time.

When I changed out my stock OEM Dunlops for a new set of the same, I believe I measured 10/32s on new rear D407 and 5/32s on new front D408. I got 19K on the first set and probably could have gotten another 2K~3K but had a long trip planned.

This was exactly the thread i was looking for. My 11' Ultra is my first bike with the big 407 back tire and I was concerned about tire life as we have three big rides planned for this summer and didn't want to have to deal with a tire change mid-season. I have 3500 miles on it now and look to put on probably 8-9k more this summer. By the sound of this thread I should still be in good shape at the end of the year. I ride solo and easy. I stopped buying speed accessories two bikes ago, and now look at things like Road Zeppelin's and backrests.
