Default speed-o problem

What a day to ride. I made a stop in at the dealer this morning and hit the road, did a
real nice 200 mile scoot-a-bout. As I neared home this evening the speed-o needle just
dropped to zero like a rock and the gauge lite went out. It stayed this way for a few
seconds and then popped back up. A minute later it did it agian, but this time it stayed
out for quite sometime. I've never seen this happen before, could it be a senor issue, is
there a sensor? Anyone have this happen or know the workings of a speed-o on a 2002
FLHTCUI ?
I have no shop book on this bike. I guess after 4 yrs and 41k miles I better buy one. ; )

Thanks all,

I don't know about the gauge light going out, but the seedo sensor is on the top of your transmission. It's held on with a single screw. Remove this and pull the sensor up and clean the metal shavings off of it. Re-install and you're done. Usually when this is the problem, the speedo needle hops around alot. This may not be your problem though, due to the light going off to.

Great, I'll be checking the sensor tonight.
I'm hoping for an easy fix, yeah right.
I have a memorial weekend trip planned,
so of course something has to flair up.

thanks for your post.

I have had my sensor get dirty and affect the speed reading, but have not seen it affect the light. You might want to check the plug on the back of the speedo head as well.

If the light is going out then your gauge must have loose wiring or maybe a cold solder joint internal to the unit...regardless I'd bet the problem is "power" related and not a sensor. A sensor does not backlight the gauge know what I mean? Try opening up the bezel and reseat everything first...

I agree with lp, your problem is power related if the light is going out also. It could be as simple as the plug is coming loose on the back of the speedo.

Goodluck with it either way.

Thx for advice all.
I did pull what I thought to be the sensor from the top of the trany.
This sensor has a spring pressured ball in it. I found no filings at all.
I did blow it out good with air and wiped it down good. Put it back in
and the problem still there. You're probably right, it's a pwr issue. I'll
pull the fairing and look for loose wires/ground.

hmmm, I may have removed the wrong sensor, I think I pulled the sending unit.
The unit I pulled had two wires and was a screw in type of device that takes about
an 3/4 wrench. I read more post and it seems like the speedo sensor unit is held in
place by a allen set screw and has one wire. ??? I'll search the www for a picture.
If anyone has a pic ( of the sensor ) they can post that would be great!

Thanks again all,

Went out on lunch break and found the right sensor. Looked down and there it was, duh...
Removed it and was cluttered up pretty good. A short ride around the parking lot and it looks
good so far, I'll get it on the road after work to make sure.

Thanks again for the advice.
