Default Charging System Help!

Hopped on my 2001 Electra Glide Standard and went for half a ride today. She's got just over 25,000 miles on her and is still the best bike I have ever owned. About thirty miles out, engine stumbled, engine light came on, was able to get off road into a parking lot and shut her down. Tried to re-start -- nothing. Headlight very dim. Removed battery, went home, charged battery. Load test ok. 13.5 volts. Returned to bike, installed battery, rode home wthout stopping. Battery still tested ok. Charging system check = NOT OK. NADA. Nothing. Pulled primary inspection cover and stuck my nose in. Smelled like hot primary oil but did not smell like sh## or puke. Volt meter in fairing has always been very erratic and unreliable but now registers NOTHING. How bad does primary fluid smell with a bad stator? Is there any thing else to check besides the stator and the voltage regulator? Anybody else been through this and found a simple fix?

You said your charging system check showed "Not Ok", did you check the voltage regulator specifically? I have 34,000 on my 01 RK and just replaced the VR. My initial symptom was the starter dragging and eventually the bike wouldn't start. I had the battery checked and recharged. My dealer checked the charging system and said the results pointed at the VR. I installed it myself for $230 (I could have bought one cheaper off of ebay). The dealer didn't charge me for the charge system check, you may want to go by your local dealer and see if you get the same results.

if you end up replacing the charging system, I would recommend a Cycle Electric setup. You can get the rotor, stator and regulator for around $300. It's a 38A system. It's also more efficient than the shunt regulator Harley puts on their bikes. I have one on my bike, and it's perfect. I think I got it from Dennis Kirk.

No, I did not check the charging system at the VR -- just at the battery. Planning to check the ground connections at the starter and the VR, then to the dealer to test the charging system. Still trying to figure out if I missed some "symptoms" over the last few weeks or if the charging system just typically goes wthout warning.

It is usually without warning. A charging system is like a light bulb - either it works or it doesn't.
