Default My back hurts

Went for a ride yesterday and my back, between my shoulder blades, started hurting after about 30 minutes. It was so bad I almost turned around and went home. I keep going and it eased up but hurt all day long as long as I was on the bike. As soon as I would get off the bike it would stop, and then start back as soon as I sat down. I have noticed in the past after a few hours it starts to hurt, but never this fast and this bad. One thing I have noticed is if my wife is with me, it does not hurt at all. I dont think I lean on her as a back rest. I have 2 different seats and it does this with both of them, prob a little worse with my corbin but still hurts with both of them. Any ideas of what I can try to fix this? Thought about a driver back rest but not sure if it would help.

I have same problem, back rest, different bars or seat. When you take off you are going back and using those muscles to resist. When you maneuver bike you use those muscles. I think you will get use to it after a while. Mine comes and goes, depends how much I ride. I am 53 and still hit gym a lot, still those muscles are tough to hit. Same muscles as drawing my bow back. Good luck

Mine would do that even with wife riding now a take 4 muscle relaxers, and drink a 5th of rye and it doesn't bother me anymore.

Pain killers for me too. I think I need the bars pulled back a couple of inches, seems like I am reaching for them.

Tom from http://harleygoodies.com/ here. Our floorboard extenders have been known to help with sore backs, although it sounds like your problem is more from the bars from the part of the back you are describing. Between the blades if from arm position. It sounds like you need bars are not as wide and possibly higher. Sometimes a different seat can help this as well. Do a little research, but I'd say bars first, or at least turn them so they are up higher.

Tom

I had a similiar problem with my back but, I don't think as bad as your's. I could ride around 80 miles before my back between my shoulder blades got really sore. Like you, when I rode with my wife two-up, I noticed that it wasn't as bad. Two-up riding caused a change in the angle of my back. Pullback handlebars and driver's backrest (with some modification) solved most of the problem.

Are you still running the stock handlebars that came with the '02 Road King? Is this a new pain? I was gonna' suggest new bars if this was a new bike (new to you, that is). I guess knowing a bit more of your history on it might help our diagnosis...I'm not a doctor but I do stay at Holiday Inn's.

You might try bringing your elbows closer to your body. I would have the same pain over the years and I finally was able to figure it out. It didn't matter what kind of bike I rode I would get the sharp pain below the left shoulder blade. I still get it now and then when I get lazy and don't keep my elbows tugged in closer to my side. You might try that and see if it helps.....it won't cost a penny to try it.
