Default Any Recommended GPS Apps for iPhone 3G

Good evening fellow Tourers,

I just ordered a RAM Mount for my iPhone and may order another one for my Garmin Nuvi 260W, but then began wondering if there are any decent GPS apps for iPhone that might simplify my already crowded inner fairing/handlebar area.

I'm fully aware that the Garmin is a purpose-built GPS and I'd be foolish to think that the iPhone is anywhere remotely close to being able to deliver the same functionality. I'm simply wondering if anyone has found an iPhone GPS app that is "good enough" to avoid adding another mount to the bars or fairing.

Thanks!

The only problem with using the iPhone GPS is that your battery will get sucked dry very quickly, so you'd need to power it externally. Additionally, from a M/C GPS perspective, I would [personally] consider a GPS with a larger screen so that you can actually read / see the screen.

Don't get me wrong, I am an iPhone 3G owner as well and love having it available, but on the bike, I think a Garmin unit is a better choice.

I prefer my nuvi 760 to the iPhone.

Right now there are NO turn by turn directions GPS for the Iphone unless it is jailbroken. Then there is an app called xGPS that works in conjuntion with the Maps program. Currently know of no other options and Apple is not letting any developers other anything right now.

I don't ride with a GPS right now but am considering it. I do rely on my iPhone 3G but NOT for turn-by-turn -- it simply doesn't do that right now. I pull over when necessary and use two apps: Google Maps -- replaced printed maps with one caveat -- when you don't have connection, you have NO map. And Here I Am -- a quick and easy way to send email to anyone with link to google map showing your current location. iTunes lists two apps by that name (not sure why Apple allows that) so the one I use is by Arboretum Software.

Wait for the 3.0 software they are allowing developers to use turn by turn with voice and I bet they won't be cheap cause the developers cannot use the google tiles they have to get a license from google or M$ on their own

Perfect summation. Agreed.

Zumo 550 on the bike, Nuvi 760 in the car. iPhone 3G if I'm on foot and need quick directions to a nearby location.

What would we do without technology? How the hell did Lewis and Clark make it west? By the way, when is the new OS for the iPhone coming out?
