Default Fairing Removal

09 Ultra, planning on removing the fairing today, but doing a little research first. Wondering if the factory mounted fairing deflectors need to come off first and also I have the chrome windshield trim piece with lit directional signals and I assume that the winshield mounting screws are behind it, then I guess there is a wire that will prevent fully removing the front fairing. Anyone done this that may have some knowledge? The repair manual does not show anything but fairing removal.

There's a sticky at the top of the page regarding the hogtronics installation. That takes you through it really well.

Thanks, but doesn't answer my question, guess I'll take it apart and all will become clear.

The deflectors don't have to come off, they screw into the inner fairing only. Also the 3 screws on the outside of the LED strip are the windshield mounting screws. There is also a connector inside the fairing to unplug the LED strip so the fairing can come completely off. Don't forget to unplug the headlight and it's good to cover up the spot lamps with old socks so that you don't scratch the fairing during removal. See attached for LED strip

Put a towel over your front fender - it will save a lot of cussing later, lol

Once you start to take it apart - you will see what needs to be done - the second time you will be able to do it with your eyes closed...

Listen to DAWG, he's the man... also throw something over your front fender, it's a super easy job

You are correct that the SM doesn't address the accessories added that may be an issue if only the SM directions are followed.

I prefer to unscrew the three windhield screws and remove the stainless trim piece HD sells, and the windshield. I set those aside and reinstall the center screw before removing the other four screws. That way, the outer fairing is secured while the other screws are removed and I can remove the center screw without dealing with the windshield and trim.

As Dawg said, remove the headlight plug and carefully remove the outer fairing. Socks over the passing lamps and protecting the front fender are also important details.

You can also rest the outer fairing on the passing lamp bracket if need be for some reason. Since my bike is set-up without passing lamps, when the last screw comes off, the fairing is also coming off with or without my help. All the more reason why I reinstall the center windshield screw and make sure I'm ready to take the outer fairing off the bike.

Good luck with your project.

Just like Leo said, super easy job. Just take your time and don't tighten the screws too much when you put it back on. Plus it is surprisingly light.

No one has mentioned the two torx screws up underneath the fairing. One on each side. Turn the handlebars all the way to the side and look up from beside the tank. You'll see one. Remove it and turn the bars to the other side and you'll see the other. I agree with the protection over the passing lamps. I like to put a thick, cotton athletic sock over each one.
