The shoes were meant to wear.....that is why people CHECK THEM FOR WEAR.
Just because you found a couple flakes means your oil filter is working.
I went with cam gears and my shoes were worn a little. Mine had 29,000 iles and the mechanic said they had 20,000 miles left.
Don't get your panties in a wad....have the shoes checked if they haven't been done.
Flecks don't necessarily mean they have gone bad just that they are wearing.
Plenty of people are getting many miles out of their engines without total tensioner failure but if you are handy why not take a look anyway.
EDIT: Damn I just said the same thing themensh said without looking. I hate when I do that!
It's the equivalent to saying "I've got a belly button!"

Chuck
kinda what I was thinking that they must throw specs into the filter the hole time they are wearing out will pull cover and check though just to rest easy for the summer thanks
The tensioners wear in the middle with small ridges left on the sides that may/will break off and get caught in the filter, if they are worn to the point that this is happening then its time to change them. Whats the worst that can happen, well your oil pump is made out of very soft aluminum, anything going through it will cause it to have excess clearance which will result in low oil pressure, a piece could get stuck in the inner cam bearings causing bearing failure etc etc, I would change them as soon as possible.
Just did the 30,000 mile service. No orange flakes in the filter. Pulled cover anyway and found tensioners had some wear. figure they are good for 10,000 to 15,000 more miles. Will wait till winter to do anything about it. May just have to buy new ultra to get new tensioners.
