Replaced mine at 43000 miles and did gear drive. My pads were not wearing even so they went away.

My 2001 SERG had 20K miles when I replaced mine with the Andrews cams and new HD tensioners, oil pump, new bearings, etc. I did the work myself but the parts are still $800 or so. If you are going to check the tensioners I would just replace them as most of the work is getting the exhoust off and the cam cover after that is pretty simple. Install a set of 203 SE cams, and adgustable pushrods while your at it and you will be fine for another 20K miles or so. My inner tensioner was shot so mileage does not mean anything although I believe after 2003 the oil ports were changed to give more oil to the inner tensioner. Ask your HD dealer about this.
