We have a Shell and a Chevron here in Granite Falls. I did a good honest test in my truck this past winter and found that I get a consistant 2 mpg better with the Chevron than with the Shell. That was enough for me to only use the Chevron fuel whenever possible.
Filled up with Shell Premium gas today, and for the first time ever with this bike I had some engine minor pinging. Granted, it was 100 degrees out and the pinging was on a long uphill. But I never had any pinging with Chevron 94.
It is common knowledge that the excrement from the South end of a Northbound bull contains a substantial quantity of nitrogen. So it only makes sense that Shell Corp has spent millions in research resulting in clear cut evidence which confirms that adding bullsh#@t to their gasoline will increase sales performance. Shells primary sales target group is Sheep.
I read somewhere that the MOCO recommends Shell gasoline. It's probaly crappy enough to cause damage the motor and you'll have to bring it to stealer for service.
i've been using shell exclusively other than if i'm really where a shell station is not available. no problems, knock on fiberglass, but the best grade here in oklahoma where i live is 91, which is the best premium i can find.
I try only to use gas company's that put an additive called "Top-Tier".........( cleans your intake manifold and valves) in it..I often use shell 92 & have never had a problem with it..you must have had a station with bad tanks...

If they do, you can bet it's ONLY because Shell pays them to recommend it.
As noted before, the gas distribution pipelines that run all over the country are a shared resource, that is everyone uses the same pipes. The gas that runs through them is defined at specfic compositions.
Once the gas is put in the delivery truck it contains the additives for that brand - additives are the 'only' difference in fuel (discounting other forms of contamination).
I have used shell 91 almost exclusively once Texaco was bought up by Shell. As far as I know, other than avgas, 91 is the best octane rating availible in Colorado. I have used other brands with good success as long as it was a major brand.
Since about 1995 there hasn't been much difference in any of the gasoline brands, thats when the EPA required that all gas sold in the US had to meet certain criteria for "detergent" the stuff that keeps the engines clean, before that "cheap" gas brands were "cheap" but not since then, by the way Shell didn't buy Texaco, Chevron and texaco merged a few years back though.
