Default Starter repair help?

I have a buddy with a 2001 88ci dyna. His starter went on him today it sounds like it is free spinning and every once in a while it will grind a bit then start. A few times he had to push start it. Not a big deal but his driveway is a hill going the wrong way so once he gets it home its there unless the it catches.

So I have a service manual for my 09 96ci is it similar to the 88? The dealer told him they would have to pull the primary cover off to release the starter gear. Doesn't sound right to me.

That's a bad starter clutch.

It's a fairly easy fix if you're mechanically inclined.

You can get a better than stock starter clutch from AllBalls, Spyke, or CompuFire and just pull the starter and replace the starter clutch assy (the drive mechanism, like the "Bendix" in a car starter). What happens is that the "one-way" bearing inside it fails.

Been there.... done it ~ way too many times!

Yup, starter clutch. I believe you might find a Nippondenso used in 1998 Toyotas would be the same. And you say it doesn't sound right to you that they have to pull the primary cover because on your 09 and my 08 it has changed whereas you can simply pull it out. Older bikes you have to remove a lot mo' chit!

Yes, the starter cannot be removed like on ours. You have to remove the primary.
