I ride an 09 Ultra and I am suffering from too much heat off the engine at idle. The changes in the pipes and the little heat deflectors just off the seat don't do squat as far as I am concerned. The roll forward on the accelerator at idle to stop one cylinder to assist with heat control does not do that much either! On a 90 degree day in traffic coming home from work, I thought I was going to die from the heat!!!!! I have slip ons, V & H Ovals and no other mods and does anyone have any suggestions for me to reduce the heat!! OUCH on the legs.........s*#%!!!!!!! Thanks, Maggie
I have the Stage 1 setup on my Ultra; SEST tuner, SE a/c, and SE Touring Slip ons. Runs cooler than stock and I have not had the rear cylinder shut down due to heat, but these babies do generate a lot of heat. Fortunately we usually don't have a lot of 90 degree days in the greater Seattle area.
if you have very few miles on your bike, you'll be amazed at how much cooler and more powerful it will become when you get several thousand miles on it. and your gas mileage will improve as well. i live in a rural area, but i can imagine what it must be like riding in traffic, in town. good luck, and hope you get it worked out. that seems to be a major concern, but like i said, i haven't been stuck in a traffic jam or anything that would prevent enough cooling air to blow past the motor.
Do you wear chaps? If not get some, and highway pegs so you can stretch out away from it. You can always start buying tuners and AC up grades later, just ride it awhile. Maybe invest in RJ's Originals or Crotch Cooler.
i went with the full stage 1, harley download, se slip ons and se air cleaner. also went with syn 3 or mobile 1 syn oil. but in the end, the engine still runs hot in traffic especially in stop and go. the joys of an air cooled engine and strict epa smog rules here in california. i might try an oil cooler next. but truthfully, i think no matter what you'll still get heat on you in traffic. i have gotten use to it. sorry i'm no help.
Try out one of our crotch coolers they work very well or send it back for a full refund.Maggie my wife and I just got back from doing a 580 mile trip in 95 -100 degree weather in one day.Not once did she complain about the heat at idle or running. We sell a lot of them and offer a 100% refund a satisfied customer is our best advertising.Below is a picture with one on her Softail.
Thank You Larry. Give her a call if you like..She can answer a lot of your questions if you like
Maggie, the problem you are having is common, thanks to HD producing engines that must run lean to meet EPA regulations. The leaner the bike is running (fuel/air ratio) the hotter the engine will be.
I researched this to the absolute max and decided to have an HD race tuner installed. My shop has one of the best tuners in the area and he spent time putting it on the dyno and getting it just right. The end result is a cooler, faster and more enjoyable product.
Yes, you'll have to spend a few bucks to get it done, but the money invested will be well worth it.
Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.
Toughen up! You're sitting on top of a large, air cooled engine. If you sat that close to your car engine it would be outrageously hot too, and it's water cooled.
First question - it's an Ultra, right? Have you removed the lowers for the summer?
Other than that I agree with other posters - good synthetic oil and your choice of fuel tuner to richen it up some. Then get some more miles on it and see how you feel.
If you're still disgusted with it, sell it to me! I ride an 08 FLHX in Atlanta weather with no fuel tuner and have no problem with the heat.
