I noticed that in one of the pics in the above link there were options to test your audio system. mine has had an ongoing problem of not reaching full volume except only for a short "blip" then returning to about 3/4 level. the volume bar still shows it to be at full volume but it isn't. I've taken it back to the dealer and the radio was replaced only to have the same problem come back. dealer says that there's nothing wrong as they cannot duplicate it (aka they don't want to mess with it) just wondering if I can do this myself and possibly fix the problem.
Thank G-D someone else has this issue...I thought it was just me!
My radio on my 09 Ultra does the same thing. Took it to the dealer...first they said they couldn't duplicate it...then they said they heard it, but they all do it. HD corporate wouldn't do anything because the dealer told them it's normal. BS! I'm hoping this new download might help....

I downloaded the new software from the Harley site, unzipped both files, and burned to a CD. When I try and install the software on my radio, it just says it's reading the image or words to that effect. Nothing happens. Wondering if the dealership has the new download, or if they will play dumb like they have with most other service bulletins, etc. I'm really hoping for a fix for my radio, or I'm going to drop some $$ at Biketronics. BS when you consider what we pay for these beautiful bikes!

that software update will have no effect on the volume issue. Your 09 came with 8.19, the 8.22 was an adjustment to the VOX circuit. What you are experiencing is a product of the AVC. Try turning the AVC off and adjusting the volume as you are now. You will most likely end up with the full volume you're looking for.

Hey tech, thanks for the response. I tried turning off the AVC, and adjusting it at the various AVC settings. I still have the problem. My radio volume is good until about half way, then as I thumb the volume switch, it will blip or spike louder, but then return to the lower volume level. The volume indicator bars do show an increase, but the actual volume returns to the lower setting. I did the AVC test as well, where you roll the bike and see if there is a reading while in the test mode. It checks out OK. Too bad about the VOX setting software. I was hoping for a fix.
Does it do it while the bike is not running (No ignition)?
Does the bike need to be moving for the symptom to show up?
tech:
I tried it in the garage, bike standing still obviously. t didn't seem to do it, and that's why I suspected the AVC. Frustrating for a $20K piece of machinery to have this kind of problem, and not get support from the dealer.
Try this.
Access the sub menu from the FM screen by pressing the 1, 3, and ok buttons at the same time. Use the down arrow to scroll through the menu until you reach the "speed type" screen. You have 3 options here. High, low and J1850. Be sure the type is set to J1850

Hey tech!
OK, I checked and the type was set to J1850. Thanks for your help. What's particularly frustrating is the tech at the dealership admitted he hears the problem, but he claims "they all do it". Because of that, HD corporate won't authorize a new radio for me. I'm letting this get under my skin...I find it insulting that the dealership won't do the right thing.
Oh well...I'll see if another dealer may help me. Again, thanks for all your assistance. Regards, A06
