Rodeo - you got lucky all the way around. That is one sweet ride you got there.
As to the 10's, to each his own I guess. The wife likes the SG Trike and the I'm kinda linking the one eyed monster look of the exhaust on the SG. Sure glad I like black as a color.
For a "trike" the new one ain't bad and Black is always a classic good color. The only 2010 that speaks to me is one of the new colors on the CVO Ultra but the price tag doesnt agree.
My 08 has a whine ifwant to call it that .. but is a striaght cut gear and will have a bit different tone if wish to call it a whine so be it ... Unless an interstate rider all the time will be in 5th gear more often than any other anyway ..
There's a lot cheaper solutions to the 5th gear whine than buying a 2010. Try turning up the radio, or earplugs, or shifting into 6th. How easy was that?
I don't hear the whine really when its in fifth. Mostly just when I down shift to 1st. I agree the 10s are all we were hoping for. The only good thing so far is some of the color choices (not too different with the RK) and some of the new parts. I am thinking I will either get the new agitator wheels or the chrome and black 28 spokes from the Ultra limited....
I am willing to bet over the next few months, HD sells way more 09s than 10s.......
Exactly my thoughts. You beat me to it.
But what happens when the "negative '10 impact" drives the fence-sitters to the '09s and empties out the current (over??) stock?
<RAMBLE>I'll suggest here that the bean-counters may have stared at the economy and DC practices and blinked, ignored sales trends & data, over-rode the engineers by softening the line, and pumped up the "pretty" CVO top $$$ models. (How losing jobs sells loaded HDs I have no idea.)
I wonder - considering there are mileage hooks to qualify for the $4500 Clunker Turn-in it should be easy to swap a junker or oldie for a 45MPG+ HD, no? Well, probably not as the EPA folks would cry "SMOG!" and go overboard when zillions of various bikes hit the streets... and the treasury burns out the print presses.
</RAMBLE>
Both of my previous bikes had very loud 5th gear whine, my Road King had a very slight noise during the break in. Now that I have 1000 miles on it and Amsoil in it all noise is gone.
The MOCO, the dealers, the service techs, EVERYONE, has always stuck by the straight cut 1st & 5th gears with a vengeance. The argument has ALLWAYS been that the straight cut is stronger and can withstand more torque and stress at initial take-off and as a kick-down passing gear on the highway. Makes total sense. All that has happened here is that the MOCO has sold out because they are sick and tired of all the new yupsters bitching about the “whine” on their new $22,000 bike.
So here’s the deal IMHO. Either the MOCO and dealers lied and lied and lied about the 5th gear whine and the strength of the straight cut, or………….. they have now built a weaker bike just to appease the bitches. It’s one or the other. Why didn’t they change 1st gear? HMMMMM!!!
While I’m on a rant (many Corona’s and a couple shots of Jack are involved) let’s talk about comparing the 09’s to the 2010’s. The “Limited” is a nice little gimmick and not a bad price if you don’t mind someone else choosing your upgrades for you. So the “Limited” is really nothing more than a pre-sale of some upgrades and accessories that someone may or may not want. Oh, lets not forget that lot’s of people buy their bike on credit so the “REAL” price for these forced upgrades is way more than if you just bought the bike and improved it on the “pay in full as you go” method like most of us. Nice little trick MOCO. Bring on the sheep!
Now for the finale. Comparing the 09’s to the 2010’s. The only fair way to do this is to set aside the “Limited” and compare the 09 FLTCU to the 2010 FLTCU. The only difference I can see is the 5th gear and some fugly color schemes, other than Classic Vivid Black.
My conclusion is that the 09 is in fact a better bike due to the fact that the 2010 has a weaker 5th gear and is ugly. The people that scored the 09 Ultras for $20k made a great deal!
Of course I have the 09 so I might be slightly biased in my conclusions.
