If someone is such a professional riding their bike like they all think they are then ABS wouldn't ever be a factor. Even on a bike equipped with it, if you are as good as you say then you would never reach the threshold of braking so that the ABS kicks in anyways. So saying that ABS increases braking distance might be true, but it only kicks in when YOU apply too much brake. I practice emergency stops all the time, and can stop without kicking in the ABS, but I will always have it just in case.
I hate most ABS systems.
I have a 01 Dodge Diesel that I came close to taking a car out with because of the ABS system. The ABS system on the truck is a linked system that will relieve pressure from all four wheels if one wheel breaks traction. "Don't even ask about icy roads" The fuse is pulled and sits in the glove box. I have a constant ABS light lit on the dash but a little electrical tape fixes that.
My RG doesn't have ABS and I couldn't be any happier
How long have you been riding this bike? If you are an experienced rider, and you are riding "normal", and you bike is laying "skid mark after skid mark", all the time, hopefully you are experienced enough to know something is wrong and to GET THE DAYUM THING TO THE SHOP before you get hurt.
I have only experienced 2 panic stops where ABS engaged. Both times it seemed to work well. No skid either time. I am sure it saved my butt. Sounds like maybe a malfunction to me also. I know there are those who don't like ABS. To each his own. Personally I think it's grate. As a matter of possible interest, I spoke to a CHP Leo a couple years ago. He told me that there state comp ins claims were cut in half after the state started using ABS equipped motors. True? I don't know. Thats what he claims. Sorrow to hear about the damage to your scooter.
Yesterday I crushed my front fender in the classical way; the car in front of me was stopped in the intersection and turning right. Decided to go and after 10 feet or so decided not to go. You are guessing what happened next. Like in slow motion I crushed against him with walking speed enough to damage my front fender.
In that 10 feet the ABS did lock my front wheel 4 times, 4 inch at a time (found 4 skid marks each 4"). So in that 10 feet I had breaks only 10 per-sent of the length, rest of the time ABS was thinking!!! It felt like I didn't have breaks at all!!!!
Without ABS I would have much prettier front fender now.
I'm not saying ABS is useless, I'm saying there are situations where it is dangerously useless. Be aware!!!
i screwed up my brand new 2005 Mustang second day because the ABS won't stop as short as none ABS.

I wrecked my Mustang last year because I didn't have ABS. I was only going 10 mph, but the street was damp and I didn't have time to let off the brakes when the tires started sliding. In fact, it was this accident that convienced me to get ABS on all my future vehicles, include my SG I just bought.
