monstermile, you cleared up a lot of questions for me. thank you. i picked up the 8 gig ipod nano today, and for fifty bux more i can return it, as i've not opened it yet to best buy and i'd have the 16 gigs of music. yes, i been studying my imac computer, and finding out some very cool features. my learning curve has very little vertical activity as i'm getting older, but i'm catching on, albeit slowly. in your opinon, would it be best to stick with the 8 gig, or put another fifty bucks with it for the 16 gigs? i don't have over thirty or 40 cd's and will not be using the video feature, no movies. thanks again monstermile. great and useful information to me, this stuff ain't of my generation, and it makes me feel like an official old fart.

To put it in perspective I have an 8gb nano and have about 150 full cd's on there ripped at 128kbs. Which is considered cd quality and more than adequate for the bike speakers or ear buds. You can go higher to 192kps or 320 kps, but in my research there is not that much difference in quality. So I go for more quantity over just a little quality that I probably can't hear anyway.
And just another little tidbit about sound quality. A song ripped at 128kps in acc (apple) format does sound better than the same song ripped at 128kps in mp3 format. So I would rip in 192kps if you are ripping a regular mp3 disc.
Forgot to include one thing in my other post. Always use the VBR (variable bit rate) encoding option. You will see it where you go to change the settings I told you about in itunes.
I bought $27.00 RCA MP3 from Wally world and it holds enough songs for a 3 day trip at least.... Works for me as i listen to the radio a lot....I like to hear if something is happening locally....sometimes. IPOD is nice don't get me wrong but i couldn't see spending that kind of mone...so i spent it on a $150.00 HD overpass rainsuit instead and it hasn't rained yet so it was a good investment right...LOL.
i just bought a new fourth generation nano with 8 gigs, haven't even opened the box, because i want to return it to best buy and get the 16 gig which will hold twice the amount of cd's worth of music. the 8 gig should hold right at 160 cd's worth or music. for the fifty bux more, i'm gonna get the 16gig. i plan on using it rather than a cd player in the theatre room, and in the car as well as on my harley. the 4th generation nano uses a flash drive rather than a hard drive, making it virtually skip proof. the older ipod classic which is still sold has the hard drive. the nano is simple from what i understand, and i been studying this for the past month or so. go check out apple.com they've got all sorts of info on them.
hey texas flhx, monster mile really cleared up a lot of stuff for me on the ipods. a sharp guy who seems like he's got lots of experience with the ipods. i'm of the older generation that this new hi tech stuff just goes over my head. it's great to be able to pick the brain of someone who knows what's what with this new fangled gadgetry.

Well if you are going to use it in that aspect then by all means get the 16gb. Never hurts to have more space. Better to have extra space and not use it than want more and not have it. But if you are going to be using it on your home theater as a replacement to cd's you might want to bump the quality up to 160kbs in aac format. Your cd files are only gonna be a smidge bigger. It may or may not yield you a little better sound. Like I said from all of my research and to my ear 128kbs in aac format sounds great. But I only use my player for portable applications. Have never used it in my home theater as I rarely listen to music in the house.
And I think you are a little confused on the Nano vs. the Classic. The 4th gen is just the newest version of the nano. All Nano's have been flash drive based. As is the Shuffle and Touch. The Classics (and previous gen ipods) are hard drive.
I have a IPHONE on a ram mount plugged into the aux jack. Works great and now for an extra 3 dollars a month, I have XM radio. Real clean and comes off fast.

Your right he did, in fact i appreciate all the responces everyone has made to this thread!! Lots of thinking to do now.... thanks again.
I've been wanting to acquire an ipod for my 09 FLHX. Which one should i buy and what is the best to use to mount it to the handle bars?
I have a 1st generation ipod touch. Mounted on left side with mount from RAM. 12" cord from Radio Shack is perfect. Also bought an ipod remote control from Scosche Industries. Have it attached to left grip. Pretty cool --- just a touch of a button to control ipod. (Be careful with a Road Glide --- cord might not be long enough for stationary fairing.)
