I have a 2007 Ultra and I have never used the CB or intercom. Now that my wife has begun riding with me, I decided to give it a try. I bought two matched sets of headphones with mic and plugged them in.
Turned on the intercom and CB as described in the manual. Can't get anything through the intercom, and the CB plays, but only when you're listening to cd, or radio, a strong enough signal will break through. Is that normal for the CB?
As for the intercom, I plugged both sets of headsets in, put on the passenger set, and spoke into the driver mic....nothing. I tried while adjusting the vox all the way up and down, still nothing.
That's exactly how a cb should work. If you have a mate with a cb that can talk to you on your channel, you'll find it comes through loud and clear (there are volume controls for the cb that might need to be set) The intercom has a vox setting that you might need to adjust. Check the manual. I have used the cb, but haven't gotten a second headset to try the intercom yet, so not much help there.
We gave up on the VOX, other bikes around us would trigger it when they throttled up. Might try it again on a trip but when we ride in the group we turn the CB off and use the push to talk for the intercom.
We use the intercom all the time. We rarely listen to music, radio, or CB. My wife likes it best when I put the VOX setting on "always open" (max setting). She doesn't like to miss the first part of everything I start to say. So, this setting is more like normal conversation, or at least normal for us. We wear full face helmets so there is little background noise. Not sure how noisy this would be if you were just wearing a half helmet.
I also hook a GPS (nuvi 760) to the aux input when we are on trips. Kind of funny though because "the lady" will sometimes freak my wife out a bit when it starts giving turn directions. I can feel her jump a little in the back - gives me a chuckle. Of course, I am easily amused...
Honestly, the ONLY thing that really makes me want to get an Ultra is the CB. I will use a handheld CB when riding with some of the guys, but its such a pain, would be so much easier to have an onboard CB radio.
